'Pri Slave Drive - ATAPI Incompatible'

Hey guys.

My chum is getting this when he's trying to boot, it posts but gives him the above error message then the comp freezes, he's worried his HDD is nackered and he hasn't backed up

.

Is there anything he can do or is his HDD borked? Just thought I'd ask for him here before doing anything else.

How'd you get it fixed? having this problem on one of my older pcs

All he did was googled it and found a load of other people with the problem, like here: http://www.duxcw.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/350.html he managed to get into safe mode then it was easy from there.
