The Samsung F1 that everyone raves about is only about £95 for the 1TB drive.

The Seagate 1TB is £166.

Quite a difference.

I have always used Seagate drives and have never had a problem with them.

Is it worth risking a Samsung?

And risk ending up with a faster and quieter drive for far less money? I don't know...

I've never once had an issue with a Samsung drive and own LOTS of the 1TB F1's.

i have maxtor (before they were bought out), seagate, hitachi, WD and samsung

havent had a problem with any of them although WD ones are noisier and hotter and the samsungs are quieter and cooler with the others somewhere in the middle

i just got a Samsung F1 1tb its so much faster and windows ops are a lot snappyer then there ever was with my "old" 500gb Seagate 10 500gb only £88 quid as well !

Tempted by the Samsung then. Although I feel its never a good idea to leave a manufacturer you have never had any problems with.

At the end of the day if it fails, it fails - the more drives you use (from the same maker) the more likely at some point one will break.

I used to swear by WD and nobody else for the reason you state, - but I've had two storage volumes go kaput in less than a year. I will still buy them though and their Black edition drives might be my next purchase if their prices fall *HINT!*;)

Now that Maxtor have disappeared from the market (you know what I mean, Seagate are essentially making them) I don't think there are any really bad manufacturers left. WD, Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi, Fujitsu are all names that might be considered.
