Priced up this system, but is it a waste?

here is what i have in my basket

Gaming machine, will use current graphics cards and add a 320gb hard drive probably.

Reason i ask is it a waste is that ive seen C2Q benchmarks where the i7 is actually a bit behind on gaming for some odd reason?

also i figured its cheaper to buy 3gb of ram for now, get 6gb when its cheaper next year.

How is that PSU? powerful enough?, anything i can do to make it a bit cheaper?

just need to sell my unused ps3 then i can get the stuff.

personally I'd go for something cheaper like a core2duo with 4gb ram and get a 4870 (get the x2 if you have a large monitor) and it will probably give you better performance, at a lower price too!

almost £700 on mobo, processor and ram and you're going to keep using 8800GT's?

If you've got that much to spend and you're computer is used for gaming surely you'd be better off with daven's suggestion? - unless you plan on getting a 280 or 4870 graphics set-up soon!

yep, no point having the processor power and not the graphics power aswell, better off getting cheap board chip mem and a good card.

i would be broke so i wouldnt be able to afford a 4870, i would have to wait a few months..

This is the problem when you have a certain budget but want to get the latest hardware.

i can get a C2D or C2Q setup but it will be obsolete next year, then i wont be able to upgrade it anymore

I disagree, its a good upgrade route, your mobo, + cpu will be future proofed, it will improve your performance and you can always upgrade your graphics cards further down the line.

I'm not actually sure if its a good motherboard, i only chose it because i saw it supports SLi & Crossfire.

if it can support future cpu's late next year and after then it would be a good investment i suppose.

I'd go for it, I've read good reviews about the board, the processor is just out and it will give you a firm base to build on.

Don't worry about upgrading your 8800GT's atm, it is still a reasonable card and you are right to think the cpu/mobo/mem is more important. It is easier to upgrade the card at a later date on a budget. However, generally I'd wait until next year when the socket 1366 is more mature and the Phenom II has possibly driven prices down a bit. Generally you should probably wait, but if you HAVE to upgrade now, then what you have in your basket seems like a good system and should all work well.

Its the mark 1, for both intel and asus of this platform.

I would put good money on Intel announcing a tweak to the CPU specifcatons within 3 to 6 months (usually the VRM specs) and a mark board from asus as well. This will render the board not futurre proof (having said that asus are usually very good at making premium boards adapt if at all possible).

Life on the bleeding edge often suxs

There is no suggestion that a C2Q system would be obselete by next year imho as games (generally) do not yet make effective use of four cores and PCI-e 2.0 is here to stay for a while yet so a decent C2Q or even C2D rig would see u for 2 more years for less than half the price, allowing u to upgrade to latest gfx (and maybe even a new monitor). If you then got upgrade fever again next xmas hopefully the i7 would have dropped in price significantly or may do so in the more immediate future after Phenom II is released.

Also worth baring in mind your GT's are worth a bit at the moment.

If you did go for i7, the P6T is not much different from the OC palm afaik and is cheaper. Also check the OCZ RAM. Anyone know why the G-skill 1600MHz RAM is only £103?

Edit: links added.

Your going to want a bigger case thats for sure. Coolermaster Cosmos S i'd recommend, or if your a fan of the Antec look go for the Twelve Hundred - you get the EATX upgrade-option.

Nice spec, personally I'd go for a slightly meatier psu if possible but that should be okay. Most psu's aren't true unless they state they are. Just need to get a nice video card and you're well away. I'd go for a 1gig or above card with that spec. Enjoy:)

No idea why the gskill ram is cheaper, never had any luck with it and is probably the reason why i decided the corsair instead.

I'm going to have to work out the exact budget i have to upgrade, tomorrow im putting my 60gb ps3 on fleabay which should fetch 300+ hopefully. I already have £320 so im not far off now.

would be quite upset if the price comes down on that system by quite a lot after xmas though.. :o

i know ram/board prices might change, not so sure if it will be as dramatic on the cpu.

so i would probably need a 1kw psu right? instead of the 750

anybody have any idea of what i can change in that list to drop the price but without losing any performance? ram? case? i currently have a LianLi pc60 i could keep it, but then id have to take all the stuff out that i have in there now.. i think the antec 900 looks more stylish, and better cooling with that big fan at the top.

1kw psu's are more than twice the price of 750w ones, how annoying.

Now i COULD sell one of my 8800 GT's on fleabay and do it that way to pay the extra for the psu.. i really dunno what to do
