Priced up this system, but is it a waste?

Maybe i should ask a better question, will a i7 benefit later on when more powerful graphics cards come along vs older processors?

cheers

i7s are better and faster technology than the older Intel quads. At the same speed the i7 will perform better. However it's not the case that later technology will "unlock" more power from the i7.

I don't see the point in an i7 unless you want to be able to upgrade in a year or so with a new processor, or you can't get the performance you want from the older quads.

If I was you, I would spend around £400 on a P45 chipset rig, then upgrade again later on around Sept 08 when the P55 chipset is released - thats what I intend on doing.

You should be able to sell the P45 chipset mobo, cpu, ram for at least half it's cost, then you could put it towards the P55 chipset. :)

Also spend as much as you can afford on a decent graphics card, ATI 4870 or GTX260, you will see more benefit having a nice graphics card for gaming than anything.

it would actually be better for me to do that, its just i dont want to get a older platform and be disappointed that this new one is faster.. i just dont know what to do :(

either way, i'd be spending the same amount on a c2d or c2q setup + a 4870x2 as i would if i got a i7 setup bar new graphics.. so im stuck in between really

like i said though good thing about i7 is i can upgrade cpu & ram next year with the 1366 socket, gpu would be sooner than both

:o

so ill just stick to my original plan and get the i7 components

it will offer a good upgrade path for next year, and the socket wont be dead untill 2-3 years so good enough for me.

as someone mentioned about the mobo about being mark 1 (dont quite understand that) cant say ive heard about it with other boards. I'll probably head over to XS in a few days and ask what the best components are for clocking, see if they think the stuff i chose is any good.

The PSU is more than needed... I've got a 625W to power a similar system.

Save some money and get the P6T without the palm device.

Get G.Skill memory and get 6GB for the same price as 3GB of Corsair... 1333MHz memory is sufficient with the i7, as the onboard memory controller will still supply monster bandwidth.

Yes,Enermax Modu82+. :D I was thinking about holding out for the new Revolution model, but it starts at 850W, so I'm guessing it will be £140+... not worth it when the 625 is about £83.

oh right, what exactly is the palm device good for anyway?, can already do all that stuff it does in the bios.. I didnt notice that P6T had the same features as the other board.

Btw i have never ever had luck with gskill memory so as much as id like to buy it, i dont think i will.

What kind of setup is 750W good for? if i upgrade graphics next year then i think it will not be enough possibly.
