Prices ever expected to fall?

Unless all you do is watch some movies and browse the internet you really need to start thinking about 16GB now though, I frequently go over it when gaming.

I've just upgraded to 16GB from 8GB of RAM. 8GB of RAM is fine for most games unless they are open world. 16GB is more than enough for open world games. I'd like to know what games need more than 16GB of RAM.

Makes sense. Wouldn't the extra cores of the Ryzen 7 not help with the graphics programs workloads.

I'm mostly a freehand artist; I chew up a lot of memory with dozens of layers and 4k resolutions, but I don't really apply a lot of effects other than the occasional blur. Besides, I've got my eye on Zen+, so I'd rather be a little frugal now and then splurge on the best drop-in replacement CPU in 12-18 months :)

There isn't any.

Heavily modded Kerbal Space Program will eat 12-14gb memory without trying - push it further and you can get the game on its own well above 16, nevermind whatever background processes you have running. Cities Skylines with a ton of workshop assets can get equally crazy, and even Minecraft can be modded up to consume a good 12gb+ if you like that sort of thing.

The fact that off the shelf games don't need 16gb certainly shouldn't be taken to mean that you can't end up playing a game that will benefit from it ^^

...if it wasn't clear, I already have 32gb, I use upwards of 75% of it regularly, and it's a fundamental part of my system requirements for any build. There's little point trying to convince me that less is enough :)

The issue with RAM and graphics programs like Photoshop (for example) is that typically they keep an awful lot of data in RAM, if there's not enough RAM then performance is effected as it then needs to cache / use swap, more cpu cores doesn't in any way help this... Fast storage can though, so having swap file/ cache running from fast SSD can mitigate lack of RAM somewhat.

If you do any serious graphic work then I'd recommend a minimum of 32Gb ram, especially if using the adobe suite as typically you have multiple apps open at once. Our graphics workstations have at least 64 Gb and some even 128 Gb but we do some very large scale graphics.

I just play games and mine never goes higher then 8gb Maybe a couple, but most are below 8gb

I would, but I'm really starting to suffer on this old rig now :( It's stump up for new kit, or pay some extortionate price for an old i7 to slot into this one, and I would hate to give someone the satisfaction of selling me a 2nd hand 3770k for the original shelf price! Prices of used sandy/ivy i7s are just disgusting, imho.
Yeah I know it sucks, think I'll wait it out I hate paying over the odds.

Similar to what I experience to be honest. I have 16gb but can't remember ever seeing it go over 50% usage.

With the Workshop assets I'm using in Cities Skylines I see all the 8GB of the GPU used and upto 12GB of my 16GB DDR4 in use.
Quite simply the more assets and props that you use for that game the more memory it needs.

I was saying that 8GB isn't really enough RAM now and upgrading to 16GB for gaming is becoming necessary, I wasn't saying games use more than 16GB of RAM, I should have worded it better.

Their is a lot of pumping it up this year across the board you generally see this at the end of the economic cycle would not be surprised to see a fair bit of stock getting shifted at lower prices next year.

Also until a very few months ago, DDR3 was still a mainstream memory. Now all mainstream boards effectively use DDR4, unless you buy into an EOL product of course.

Supply and demand particularly for the better performing sets. I boought 16GB of 3200C14 at £150 earlier this year, I will not be buying any more soon.
