Prices make me tempted to go sli for fun

Running a 980ti seahawk, i see no need to upgrade yet and with the prices of everything i it puts me out of that game for a while. Ive got a minor op coming up and 2 weeks to do not a lot. Got a feeling a might be tempted to try some 980ti sli. I reckon by Feb they will be selling for extremely cheap.

I used to run amd xfire and at one stage tested 3 gpus just for fun ( ps was not worth the hassle but at least the room was toasty in winter!) I enjoyed messing with the system and feel time to change something up.
I might also get a new case as mine annoys me now.

How does sli 980ti rate? seen some great stories of it and some horrible ones?

Don't waste your time and money, SLi is dead.

Why do you think all of the new cards have NVlink connectors on?

I would sell the 980Ti and put the extra toward a used 1080Ti.

I replaced a 980ti sli setup with a single 1080ti. It performs as well on its own as the sli setup did in games that like sli, and carries the better performance over to the ones that didn't.

Proves what i thought i guess. Ill just stick with the 980ti as it for a while till I have some more money, might get a new case to build and perfect whilst stuck after my op.

Having upgraded from two GTX 580’s in SLI to a single 1070 then SLI 1070’s I’ve every intention of bagging a second 1080ti - once the price eventually drops considerably - to go with my current one.

I had no issues with SLI and have always enjoyed the big boost it gives in the games I predominantly play (the vast majority of which support SLI and scale well)

A mate has recently bought a second 980ti for his rig (£200 from Gumtree after haggling!) and is delighted with the boost, SLI still seems to have life in it yet in my experience.

The different stories are so strange. I loved crossfire. Ran a 7950x2 and 7990, and the x2 as well. I'll see come February about another 980ti but I just like looking into these things and I enjoyed tweaking the system to get the most from crossfire and the challenge of managing the heat etc.

Do you play games on release? I haven't run multiple cards in a couple of years now, but when I did, I remember the majority of titles gave awful scaling on release and it was only after completing them did better profiles and drivers come out. I always said that multiple cards are great if you're 6 months behind the game launch schedule.

When SLI worked it was great, when it didn't it was a nightmare.

It also had a habit of stopping working when it was.... For no reason.

I don't regret SLI but I wouldn't go back.

Not really if I’m honest, no I don’t.

My predominant games are GTA V, Battlefield 4, FSX (which is not influenced by a high end card what so ever!) and Project Cars.

Add to that I rarely game these days, but when I do (did) with SLI it just worked and I was more than happy with the performance.

I do recall issues with Battlefield 1 but given I don’t particularly like it I wasn’t bothered....

But as I say, I’ve had two SLI setups from very different generations and was very happy with it, so much so, as I say, a second 1080ti is my future upgrade plan.

I think that's the key. I almost always had good experiences with multiple cards when playing games that had been out a while. If that's how you game then yeah, I can see why you like SLI.

2080/2080Ti are compatible, I’ve got the link on order. NVLink is not like SLI so potentially very interesting, the link was formerly £350 or something but now £75 so viable. Could very well be the thing which enables larger FPS at 4K and in future better RT performance.

We will see, yes it’s a lot of money but interesting!

I am just waiting for Nvidia to pull all support for SLi. AMD sort of did with Crossfire, by declaring the Radeon Duo thing (Fury) was not meant for gaming.. They never seemed to mention Crossfire again after that.

SLi IMO was always better than Crossfire but even on my Titan Blacks it was starting to lose support and I ended up trying to play on a 4k screen on one, which was not sufficient. Since then? it's not gotten any better.

Hopefully this NVlink thing can make the cards work together (by adding the RT units together) because I know Navi is supposed to be something similar (like as an example four small polaris cores in one die tied together..). IDK, we will see, but I would avoid using more than one GPU for anything now unless you are rendering and it is worth the extra electricity.
