I just installed a new samsung 500gb hd501lj to my asus K8V SE deluxe motherboard.

I am having trouble starting up - it frequently says 'no hard drive found' (or something similar). If I go into BIOS and fiddle around (looking at boot priorities) it will sometimes then go on to load windows. Once it does, then it reloads seemingly ok - i.e. I could 'restart' now and it will restart just fine.

However, whats confusing me is I restarted just now and went into BIOS to check (now that it is restarting ok), and the primary and secondary IDE are not found/  i.e. there is no hard drive showing. so how is it then managing to boot? Under the boot priorities it will then show the disc as, say order number 2 (i.e. floppy first, then hard drive, then CD-rom)

any help? :(

Well I've found the problem and solved it so thought I'd reply for any future people who search the internet (as I did for ages!!!)

The Asus K8V SE board cannot operate reliably with the Samsung spinpoint at 3Gb/s - you need to use a Samsung utility to reduce the speed to 1.5Gb/s its all available on this page:
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/faqView.do?b2b_bbs_msg_id=126&orderNum=2

I burnt mine onto CD and on startup booted from CD. This correctly updated the HDD to 1.5Gb/s (i.e. reduced the speed).

My system now boots properly every time (previously it kept coming up as no hard disc found! etc).

The ISO image I used was this one to reduce speed:
http://www.samsung.com/global/system/business/hdd/faq/2007/10/29/203849SATA1_5G_iso.zip

and there is a file to correct the speed back to 3Gb/s if you need to:
http://www.samsung.com/global/system/business/hdd/faq/2007/10/29/221751SSpeed_iso.zip

ps jumpers don't work on this disc to reduce the speed (I tried it). some websites refer to this, but it doesn't work.
