We're in the midst of planning for next years schooling for our eldest and in London the situation is rubbish and in particular our borough (way more kids than places).

I'd be interested to know if anyone else has been through/going through all this and what their experiences have been.

We were ok with our daughter. Got the first choice but this was a Catholic primary school and she was baptised. My cousin was less lucky, her son hasn't got any of their three choices and has been offered a place in a school in special measures in the middle of a sink estate 30 minutes in the opposite direction from her work and nursery for her other child.

High schools are worse. The catchment area of our only school has shrunk so much that we are no longer in the catchment of ANY schools. So we will get assigned a random school somewhere in the county that no one else wants to go to. Great.

Having places at different schools is one of our biggest concerns. We've got twins a couple of years apart and it's "fun" at the moment trying to get them to the same nursery on time :-|

twins will always be placed in the same school, just maybe not the same class, for development reasons

were are you in London? it all depends on the borough, and I might be able to help you, I am a master of the dark arts of child school placements,

with three of mine in the best schools in the borough, and one of them I swapped half way through primary school to a better school up the road from me,

and I am serious

We're in Sutton and definitely interested! Because we're right in the centre, the density of housing (mainly new build flats) is way higher than anywhere else in the borough.

Catholic primary
Kids are baptised
Wife and kids attend church regularly
Oldest in already
Easy street both kids in a great local primary school

I've debated the idea of leaving London a couple of times with my other half. We have a large family nearby and losing that support is something we wouldn't take lightly. On the other side of that, we spoke to a friends of ours who moved to Devon recently. 15 children in the class...

You can pretty much guarantee the school you want, you just need to move house to get it. We sold up and are now renting a stones throw from the school we wanted and got. I'll expect to do the same when it comes to secondary.

I refuse to risk a bad school around here, it is just too important.

Hate to echo some of the things here but you need to decide your priorities. We also had to move from owning to renting to get into the right schools. Now seeing the effect it has had on our children I am quite convinced in some cases when people say renting is money down the drain then if one were to include potential earnings for the children then in many areas now owning is money down the drain and so is the slightly better job.

But it is priorities - only you can determine what comes top but it's pretty hard to tick everything that would make your top ten - something has to give whether that be work, location, schools etc.
