Prime Stable / Game Stable

although probably heresy to admit on these here overclockers forums.. im into overclocking mainly to get more bang per buck and not overclock to the max for the competition of it. (that said i have posted my results on the ladder but i tell myself i like to 'give a little back' )

In your oppinion does one need 8 hrs prime to be game/office stable? if they are not the same, is there a reccomended efficient method to test for game/office stable (apart from games and office use).

Definitely not.

It's either stable for you or it's not, surely? If it crashes then it's not stable. The thing about a Prime test is that you pretty much know it's not going to crash, well, not because of hardware anyway.

you can still be prime stable for 11hrs and not gaming stable.

should use a combination of prime, gaming and another stress tester that targets different areas like OCCT does.

There's no such thing as game/office stable, your processor and its subsystem is either working properly or malfunctioning, if an application doesn't push hard enough to exploit that instability then fair enough.

The way I see it any overclock that is any less stable than at stock speed is a failed overclock.

Don't just rely on Prime either, if any application crashes or gives any strange error set things back to default speeds and see if it still happens - if it doesn't then you know where the problem lies.

I run Prime95 and loop 3DMark at the same time for 6 hours. If my PC's pass this test I consider them stable.

I've done this with all my PC's and never suffered a crash afterwards as a result of overclocking.
