As some of you guys probably know I am currently selling my Corsa (never intended on keeping it more than a few weeks) after making a bit of money on it. I am now looking for an R6/GSXR600 and a cheap car.

Looking at the obvious mondao option, but also looking at the Primera (possibly the GT as it is a low ins group for the power, have to run a quote)
Anyone ever had a primera GT or had any experience of one?
Should be able to pick one up in decent nick for around £1000 1997/98

Great cars. I seriously considered one for a while and one of my mates owned one. Nice inside IMO and also a great looking car from the outside. Strong engine too and the best bit is how cheap they are.

If you can live with the dash then its a great car, amazing fun to chuck down a country lane, engine will go on forever and loves the loud pedal being pressed, check for rust on the bottom of the front doors / battery bracket and under the front lip, also around the rear spoiler the paint might start to lift and rust bubbles out.

So basically 100% mechanically sound but they do tend to rust :(

Don't buy the cheapest one money can find, get a good one for just under 2k

Great engine, Much more reliable than a mudano, faster and not a taxi.

WTF, what's with the un-needed Mondeo bashing? More reliable? got any proof? Faster than what exactly? Its certainly not quicker than an ST24 or ST200, and they are used just as often as Mondeo's are as taxis

Im not looking to spend any more than £1000, there seems to be a few for this money. was looking at these and 2.0 16v mondy's, presume I'd have more fun in one of these. Have to check the insurance out. keep the advice coming guys, always welcome. I'm willing to consider pretty much anything at the mo! wanna spend about £1000 and need reliable.

Well he said he was considering a mondeo, I was convincing him to get a primera GT by putting a negative spin on the mondeo.. Simple really
I cant be bothered to find proof of the reliability, but im pretty cetain a Nissan will be mechanically more reliable than a Ford. If maintained japanese cars go on forever, whereas Fords dont, especially when considering a £1k car.
In this price rage (1k) you cant get a ST Mondeo, so the GT would be faster.
Oh and the mondeo is more taxi like than the GT.

Do you ever give up?

The Mondeo is very reliable - certainly more so than bottom of the range, poverty spec solid red Seats - the V6 is just as quick, if not more so at the top end than the GT, and both Mondeo and Primera are a favourite amongst taxi drivers.

Both are good cars, it's simply personal preference which one you prefer. The GT is excellent for a 2.0 - the Mondeo is a great 6 cylinder car. The Mondeo has a better interior, the GT is cheaper to insure, its swings and roundabouts.

Go and wind up your rear windows by hand or something.

The 2.5V6 Ghia X is faster, and available for £1K. The primera looks more like a taxi, due to its boxy shape and utterly rank interior. If maintained, fords DO go forever.

Im not arguing with any of you, but insurance is a lot more on the V6 mondao and I presume maintenance and fuel are worse to. its looking like a 2.0 16v mondao or a primera GT (leaning towards the GT) unless anyone wants to suggest anything different.

Personally I'd still have the Mondeo becuase I hate the interior of the GT and it's not THAT much slower (0-60 9.1 versus what, 8.5?), but really you can't go wrong with a nice example of either.

Mondeo needs the bodykit to look good though, mind you Primera isn't exactly a beauty contest winner.

Get the Primera - it comes with one of the greatest engines ev0r (albeit in N/A form) and quite a sorted chassis; more 'comfortable' to chuck down a B-road than a Zetec Mondeo I've found.

The Primera engine is indeed bullet proof, however the gearbox can give up on them. The Primera has a duplex cam chain rather than a belt so no worries about when it was done last. It also makes them a dodle to maintain yourself. My Primera (non GT) has now covered 156k and is still as sweet as a nut.

so basically if I get a primera GT, regular oil changes and filters should be all that is needed. is the gearbox a worry on them. I was counting on everything being over engineered *10 being japanese.

True, but then the belt on the 98- Mondeos has a staggering 10 years or 100,000 mile change interval, so thats not really a worry either.

Well you cant beat Jap for reliability. :)
The Primera is also very cheap to buy second hand, cant fault the choice. :)
