I'm intrigued why you ever talk about Linux in the course, I only passed through the full course and A level computing a few years ago and this kind of material doesn't fit in anywhere. Have you just gone barmy and completely off track to ensure you are the student from hell or has it just changed an awful lot? Of course in my day we didn't have 3 monitors, in fact I still only have one :/

OK, the teacher has stated that we must "give a detailed description of the hardware/software used with advantages and disadvantages" (this is all based around a rather strange project [well in my opinion] :p). We have to "describe different software used and alternatives".

Now, I heard the teacher talking about how "we use Windows XP" at school and thus I thought it would be a good idea to talk about why I have chosen Windows XP over Ubuntu, or Mac OS X. I decided to use kernels partially to show the teacher I actually know something about computers, and partially because I thought that it was a valid argument that a hybrid kernel (as is the NT kernel) could be considered a kernel that tries to have the best of both the microkernel architecture and the monolithic kernel architecture. I then went on to say how Linux (according to Wikipedia) has a monolithic kernel and therefore I said that Windows could be better because of the architecture. I just tried to argue the point a bit with the limited information I had. (I also want to teach the teacher something. :p).

(By the way, the project we do, I feel, is not all that good. Part of it is designing a database in which the details of staff are stored. However, this is a medical practice, and from my experience of medical practices (both my parents are GPs), they don't have loads of employees. I think my mother's practice employs about 25 people (at maximum). I simply didn't really see the point in implementing an overly complex database system, when a spreadsheet could have been made and then printed off and put up in different places in the practice. Who can't simply look down a list of about 20 people and see which are doctors, or which are over 40 years old? It just seemed a bit irrelevant to me. Also, we have do justify doing things that we didn't have a choice in. I personally would have preferred to code a PHP front-end from which the employees could access the database and do queries (this would be on a local network). I would then just create a MySQL database. This would be better than using Microsoft Access as the employees would have a simpler GUI to learn, and it would be all browser-based.)

Lol, basically do the least you can do to get the marks. They don't mark you down for content, well they didn't on the IT course I did, they mark you for whether you show what software u've used and what else you could have, why you didnt etc.

"I used Windows XP, because this is what I'm used to using.
I could have used Linux or bla bla bla as it would mean I could have used different software, but I didn't because I'm not so confident using Linux and thought it would have taken me longer to complete the task"

Thats what I did and got full marks, its easy answer the question in the shortest way to get the marks.
