I also went to Hogwarts and while I'm not quite as ancient as you, it was brilliant fun and totally hedonism (in the late 80s early 90s). Similar to you myself and my pals were caught taking a load of brewing kit into our house at school. Boots had called our housemaster to say we were buying it (damn house ties). He was a soft touch and rather than punish us let us brew it with him as a project. Certainly took all the fun out of it, but were were about 15 or so, so it was kind of him.

During the mid/late 60's I was at the "Prep" school (Age 8-12) One of the things I remember most fondly about this time was the "Tree Houses" that we built.

Don't think a couple of planks across some branches. These were serious constructions with roofs and windows. Think in terms of the tree-house from the old Tarzan movies! Many years later my Parents told me about just how impressed the staff were at our ingenuity and engineering skill.

One of our group smuggled in a hatchet, We felled trees for some of the constructional timbers! Looking back on it it is staggering just how much freedom we were given. Though at the time we thought that we were somehow operating under the radar Obviously we were not! the Staff knew exactly what we were up too, and they let us do it just to see what we would do. I doubt if pupils have anything like this freedom nowadays. and, as I said, this is a huge shame!

One of the consequences of this is that I have no fear of any task. Rebuild an engine, Install a central heating system, rewire a house! Nothing scares me!

(Oh and when I was at the prep school splinters in the feet from the bare floor boards were a constant hazard. I wouldn't let anybody else remove them but I became quite expert at removing them myself using a razor blade to such an extent that I ended up running regular "Surgeries" to remove them from other peoples feet as well, yes when i was about 10 or so!)
