It's my aim for the next 12 months - but is there a cheaper place to do it, and could see a bit of another country?

Someone I know has gone to the states to do it as it's apparently cheaper. However as her parents are buying her a house, I doubt it's the main reason. :)

Yeh, you can buy it as a package if you go to Miami and do it. The advantage there is you've never got bad weather interupting your flying time, so you can just bosh it off in a month or so. Although you have to be ready to keep your flying hours up while you get back in england.

America is cheaper but it's much easier there and you won't come back half the pilot compared to if you had trained in the UK.

It's an expensive business. I have a PPL IMC and Night rating but I have let them all expire because private flying began to bore me and it became so prohibitively expensive that I couldn't safely sustain it.

It was great to rise to the challenge and get the licence when I was 18 but it's just not worth the money any more. The private flying scene is full of old anoraks who have nothing better to do than criticise one another. I'd recommend you save your money and spend it on sky diving but if you want to do it by all means go ahead. Just be wary of the sad idiots who permeate the scene with their constant bull****.

How did you manage to afford it at 18? Doesn't the cost run into thousands to get a private license and night flying license?

I think the same can be said for any hobby! There will always be people (sometimes older) who are also into the hobby which act very condersending and negative towards others. But when you are flying and up there on your own it surely can't be that much of an issue?! Until you land.. and then you just have to shrug them off. No one could spoil something that I really enjoy doing. Who cares what they think? Do what you enjoy and leave the gossip to the ones that have no life. The money issue would be the only issue for me I think. How much was it costing to keep the licenses?
