Private plate help.

I'm very tempted to buy a private numberplate for myself but need some clarification from you bright folks. The plate I would like is listed on dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk for £245

Apart from the cost listed above and the cost of making the plates at Halfrauds (£30?) are there any other fees I need to be aware of?

Can insurance companies charge to change the registration on vehicle insurance? I'm currently with Aviva insurance however customer services is closed and I can't find anything on the website.

Probably get charged a £12 or so admin fee as they will have to send you new documents.

Thanks, so:

£245 to DVLA
£30 to create the plates
£12 admin fee
= £287

Anything else I'm missing?

You don't get charged any admin fee - All you have to do is pay for your plates, which you'll get cheaper than Halfords at various different shops.

Be aware that putting the plate on retention is quite expensive (IIRC it is over £100). If you want to sell your car and keep the plate you should put it on retention before selling it.

I only paid for my plate, nothing else. My insurance company is swiftcover, so I just updated the details online.

Yeah, sorry I jumped in a bit early there. I originally thought Berger was talking about an admin fee for the new V5.

My insurers don't charge for new docs, all the same. (LV).

that price is that price, so will be £245 plus cost of plates, if your insurance company are rip off bar stewards then they may charge you a fee!

Churchill never charged me a fee but Admiral/Elephant wanted something like £20.

I only paid £18 to have two plates made up at my local main dealer.

Try this before you get Halfords ones.

I paid £10 to get em made up via an ebay company, and the plates have all the needed BS AU stamps on them, and didn't even ask for documents

I spose you could argue that the Data Protection Act requires them to have up to date information about you although charging you for having someone answer the fone to update their records because of your vanity isn't unreasonable.

You can keep a registration number on a retention certificate for an indefinite period subject to an annual renewal fee of £25 (Current DVLA Fee) if you wish to transfer a registration between vehicles in the future the fee charged by the DVLA is currently £80. If you wish to move a registration from a vehicle onto a retention certificate then the fee is currently £105.

Just FYI.

I'm about to order one myself, not to hide the age of my car just wanted one for a while and have managed to find a plate that fits my last name pretty well. I wanted 33 for ee but they didn't have the right end letter so I think I'm going to go for 22 as ee.

Plates with more than one number = fail*

*unless they have 2 numbers and 2 letters. These are epic win. But expensive.

I was charged a £15 admin fee with Admiral, IIRC. But yeah those are the only costs. I think the plates themselves cost around £15 online, i ordered them at the same time as the DVLA order, then it all arrived at about the same time.
