I'm thinking about moving out and getting my own place soon. Its been long over due. The thing is though i keep reading about agencies doing credit checks and stuff. I was wondering if private landlords do them aswell ? i dont have a very good rating at all and have defaulted in the past when i got made redundant from my job.

Has anyone rented private on these forums and what was the process, how long was it before you got to move in and what checks were made ?

Thanks

Some do, some don't tbh.

My last landlord didn't and although I'm going through an angency this time, I took over the place mid-contract so I didn't have one for here either.

If you have a permanent job you should have no problems renting through an agency or privately. They may call your employer to check you really work there but dont think any more checks is done at all.

All taken from my renting experience in London.

i don't think 'private renting' is legal any more - landlords have to rent through a company in order to have the deposits, tenancy agreements and inventories held by a third party- and as such removing the risks of one party trying to rip off the other

we rent through an agency - and although we have had hassle, it means that legally we have rights to complain / get our money back if it all falls to bits

private renting may seem better in the short term, but you may run into problems

Of course it's legal. My last 3 rented houses have been private landlords, no third party companies involved.

Slightly wrong there. Anyone can lease a house / room (as long as they own it, etc.) but they have to keep your bond in a government approved deposit holding company.

ahh - ok, i knew we'd been told something like that - i just presumed that it had to be arranged by an agent - evidently not!
