Probability of blown PSU killing other components?

Friends Antec earthwatts 650w (came with Antec case) blew and took out a fantastic DFI motherbard and two spinning hard drives. To be fair Antec sent a replacement at no charge.

My Toughpower just started to go (random shut downs) but I caught it before it went bang. Typical though as I've just spent 280 notes for a GTX970, so spending 100 more on a PSU was not what I needed.

Ive had them go before at home and I've yet to have any components damaged. I did have one go at work that killed the motherboard too though.
