Probably a common query - Ps3 won't read blu ray :(

Does it play games?

And does it literally not read them at all, or just not play them properly?

The disc in the console in the video is MW3, it's plays my brilliant and classic Bottom dvds instantly, but it just won't spin up blu ray, just half spins them then tries again, from my experience, this is due to the laser not finding the initial bit of code or whatever it needs to actually recognize it as a game :O

But isn't MW3 a blu ray disk so it does read blu ray then.

Is it just movies and all movies or burned private blu rays ?

your blu ray laser is dead.

this happened to a mate of mine, i had to find out what version of laser he needed, by checking the model number online and then finding out which drive he had, buy the laser mechanism off ebay and then fit it.

there are other options too, you can buy a full drive and then transfer over the board, but that is more expensive but the easiest to do if your a noob. roughly £40-50

or you can buy the full laser mechanism which is of medium diffuculty and the medium price range, this is what we did. roughly £20-£30

there is a really cheap option of just buying the laser optic and replacing that, this is the cheapest method but of the highest difficulty. roughly £5-10

there are plenty of youtube videos to help you.

same happened to mine, would read DVD's/CD's fine but it had loads of trouble with games and bluray movies.

They would either not appear on the XMB or if they did it would take for ever to load with the drive making noises as if it was reseting and starting again until.

Ordered a new laser unit for £30 in p&p from ebay and its worked perfect since.

Good thing with the slim ps3's they have a dual laser 1 for cd & dvd one for bluray - if it reads one and not the other you know its the laser. Just make sure you get the correct laser unit to match the one in the ps3.

As has been said, the blu-ray laser has packed up (I had a similar problem, but the failure only affected dual layer blu-ray discs with single layer blu-ray discs (which all my PS3 games were at the time) still working) although doing a restore on the system might get it working but it might not which would mean a replacement is needed.

Are you talking about the whole assembly or just the laser carriage with the ribbon cable into it?

I went for the laser and deck unit - as it was a straight swap just had to take the 4 rubber rings off the older unit and put them on the new one(putting the laser unit onto the old deck is easy)

your current laser unit will have a barcode sticker on it with letters/numbers on it (took a while to find mine on the laser unit/block it was on the side/back section)

example is my slim needed a KES-450D/450DAA KEM-450D/450DAA
