Probably a silly question...

I've just ordered an XFX 5850 and I'm wondering how the "Integrated HD audio controller" works?

Does it just show up as a seperate sound card within the system? Or does it just piggyback off the motherboards sound controller to output to the HDMI?

It reads like it could be a seperate sound card, if it is, what's the quality like? Is it comparable to on-board or is it closer to a reasonable sound card?

Thanks,
Jonny

On the back of this question, I'm going to be just as silly and ask -

..... If you use a HDMI cable in the back of a 5870 to a TV, and nothing else does this boot with BIOS etc onscreen and then boot windows as the primary display and provide audio?

Sorry to ask, I'm new to this as well.

As far as I know, the hdmi will carry both video and audio due to the inboard sound card in ati gfx cards. no need for separate jack leade or a mobo that has the spdif connection :)

So bascially if I plug a HDMI lead into the vid card, and nothing else, and then plug this into my TV I get a display with audio? How cool is that if it works.. !!

HDMI carries both audio and video signals, if you disable the hdmi output the nthe audio will go back to the onboard sound.

Having used this function i can confirm you cna switch between the two quite easily

I am currently just using the HDMI for my PC connectivity, with it running into my Onkyo sound system.

Works very well, and reduces number of cables running about.

Only problem is that if my sound system is off when pc comes out of sleep mode, it will revert to stereo, and I need to put pc back into and out of sleep mode with it on to get 5.1 back.
