problem about mp3 player

hi guys my mate has just gave me his mp3 player i when to put some songs on it and it comes up with right pretected so i tried formating it i wudnt let me he say he hasent done any thing so

any help would be apreciated

I don't know what you mean by right protected?

The Music or the actual storage bit on it?
Try flicking the lock button on the MP3 player?

by write protected i mean it wont let me remove or add songs or rename them

In that case, flick the little Switch on the MP3 player to the unlock sign
