Problem detecting hard disks.

I've recently just built a new computer with a 500gb sata drive. I installed Windows XP and got some basic programs installed/updates etc.

Then I pulled my two old hard disks from my previous computer both are IDE. I've since plugged them in but them computer doesn't pick up either of them. However If I remove the master IDE it will pick up the slave IDE.

I have a ASUS P5K-E mobo.

Anyone know how I can go about detecting these drives either in xp or bios?

Jumpers? Are they set correctly on the hard drive? :)

Might be worth checking if PATA or anything relating to the IDE ports is enabled/disabled or not.

Yeah everything is set correctly, they both work individually on the salve IDE cable they just won't work as a pair on master & slave. Nothing wrong with the cable though because I tried a DVD drive through the master and it picked up fine.

How are the jumpers set on the HDDs? If they're both set as master using the jumpers then you'll get the behaviour you're seeing, the fact that the cable has slave written on the connector you're using means nothing.

Both are Maxtor hard disks.

Both jumpers are placed vertically and one pin in from the left.

Like so,

thats your problem, one needs to be set as a slave and the other as master.

most hdd have a pic on the drive, otherwise download the manual from matrox website to find the jumper settings.

Bearing in mind some drives require a jumper on to be in slave :) Varies from manufacturer to manufacturer sometimes.

Well I've set the first as master and second as slave via the jumpers and they are plugged into the IDE cable in that order but still neither of them are detected.

Only one its detecting is my 500gb sata drive.

Any other ideas?

Detected inbios? But not the O/S? Have you put the jumpers on how your hard drive states...and not the picture.

You may have to right click on 'my computer', then goto Manage, then in 'disk management', you might see the hard drives there? If so you'll have to right click on them and add them one way or another.

I can't find them in disk management and I've tried various jumper settings for both.

They are old drives and im having trouble finding the actual jumper settings for them. They aren't on hard disk anywhere either. Maxtor Diamondmax 160GB IDE drives.

I've tried.

None of those have worked so far.

They don't show up in bios, all I see in bios is a list of SATA ports showing whats connected and whats not.
