Hello,

Bloody typical isn't it, following a thread on here where I was weighing up an upgrade, I decided today that I would hold off for a month before I go ahead for cashflow reasons.

So, I get home from work and go to boot up my PC, it turns on, the fans kick in as usual, there isn't much HDD activity which had me worried and the monitor scanned all its sources and found nothing so goes into standby.

Now, another thing I noticed was that the fan on the graphics card, which usually starts at full power when I turn the PC on and then drops to about 50% after 10 seconds or so, just stayed full power the whole time.

This lead me to believe it was my GFX card (Radeon X1900XT) as I have had a similar problem in the past. I took it out, cleaned out a load of dust from it, reseated it and tried again..........nothing!!!

So....what else could it be? Or is my graphics card screwed?

Cheers

EDIT: Something worth mentioning. I had just plugged in a new USB keyboard, whereas before I used a PS/2 keyboard. I have tried both now and it still won't boot (well, it turns on but monitor stays in standby)

EDIT: My USB mouse doesn't light up like it usually does. Motherboard gone?

the GFX card fan should drop when the OS kicks in, if you run the GFX card in a comp that doesn't have the drivers for it, the fan will just blast away on 100% as a fail safe as there is nothing controlling it.

is your comp actually booting but just no display then? i would have said it was a connection issue but you have reseated the card.....sounds like it's partly dead, can you run it in a different slot, like pci-e x1 or something?

as stated before, it's borrowing time to try another GFX card in there!

Yeah there is a different slot as it is an SLI motherboard. What will happen if I put it in the other slot?

Yeah, everything boots up fine, fans, lights, etc etc. Monitor just stays in standby though, and as mentioned the GFX fan just stays full power. The only thing that doesn't light up as it usually would is my keyboard and mouse.

I'll try it in the other slot and then see if I can find a friend who has a spare card to lend me.

Yeah there is a different slot as it is an SLI motherboard. What will happen if I put it in the other slot?

Depending on your motherboard it should work the same as running it in the top slot when all is good.

If there is a problem with the top slot (and you are ok to run it in the bottom in the first place) then putting it in the bottom slot will solve the issue.

Of course if the problem is with the card, there will be absolutely no difference.....worth a try though.....

Oh, check your motherboard manual to see what it says about doing this, I have an Asus A8N deluxe and when using a single card, I can only use the top slot.

When I'm using two cards the bottom only functions as a PCI-e x1 slot anyway.

Bugger, I have an A8N deluxe as well, so that's that idea out the window then :(

I'll try and borrow a GFX card, and if that doesn't work I'll put it down to the mobo and use it as an excuse to upgrade early!

No beeps, I don't think I have a speaker plugged in. Do all motherboards have a speaker?

I cleared the CMOS the other night and it didn't help. It definitely isn't POSTing as there is bugger all HDD activity. I had an unplug, plug in session of everything and it didn't help. Might give it another go tomorrow though.

FIXED IT!!!!

I always thought removing and reseating the CMOS battery was clearing the CMOS, but I was reading my motherboard user manual and realised there is a jumper for this. So I reset the CMOS and now it boots :)

I got a CMOS Checksum Error saying that defaults were loaded, but at least it is working again now. Means I can take my time with my upgrade as well rather than spend money I don't have :)
