problem recognising HD

I have a sony vaio laptop and i took out the hd etc, I attached it onto my main computer and formatted it using the windows formatting tool, I then put it back into my laptop and it recognises it in the bios but when it comes to installing windows on it, it says that i have no HD's attached? I know it works because if i stick it into the computer it works perfectly, so how come when i try to install windows on my hd with the laptop it doesn't work?

If you're trying to install XP then chances are you'll need to give it an AHCI driver during the install. Press F6 when prompted then add the driver later when asked.
