Problem unlocking my phone, W900i

So i got a vodafone locked W900i.
using this website

i got a unlock code but the code didnt work i just want to make sure iv done it right.

so you get the code... well my one was in the format *0000*0000hash
so . now to type in you press <***< and select 'Network' then type in number there. but i cant type stars of hash. well i take it if it doesnt work i just have to take it somewhere to get it done over cable.

but first. am i doing this right?

you don't type it...u just press the buttons...i.e. press the joystick or navigation button left once (<) press star button 3 times (***) then press navigation button left once again (<)

that should take you to the menu.
