I have a cheap laptop from the bay, an HP Elitebook 8540p. Im trying to upgrade the memory. it has 2 slots (i5 only has 2 slots i7 has 4) it shipped with 2gb, i have tried 2x4gb, 1x 2gb and 1x 4gb, and 1x 8gb.

It works fine with 2gb, but any other combination and it will rarely post boot. if it does it will blue screen and wont come back on until i remove the module and return to 2gb. The only error on the blue screen that i have caught is internal power failure. Is it possible that the 90w HP PSU i had (the laptop didnt ship with one) isnt enough and the extra RAM is pushing it over that? and i need the 120w PSU. I find it hard to believe that all the other memory modules i have tried are faulty.

Are you using the right voltage ram?
i.e. is it wanting low voltage 1.35 and you are trying 1.5? or vice versa :)

per their website, I've found the info below

Standard: DDR3 PC3-10600 SDRAM (1333 MHz)* Two SODIMM slots supporting dual-channel memory 1024MB, 2048MB, 3072MB, or 4096MB
Maximum : Upgradeable to 8192MB with 4096MB SODIMMs in slots 1 and 2

You need to make sure you're using 2 x 4Gb modules, at PC3-10600 spec (1333Mhz) or it will not work properly, if at all,it does not support 8Gb modules.

thanks all, i had the wrong sodimm modules, the seller confirmed as well , it has to be PC3-10600 1333mhz and 4gb module max nothing else will work..

PS there are no BIOS updates, looks like they cleared that area of HP site as laptop is so old.. still windows 10 , SSD and the RAM will be pretty nippy, surprisingly its already perfectly usable with 2GB..

When you click the link, select choose a differrent OS and select Windows 7 32bit, it makes no difference where bios is concerned as it doesnt really have anything to do with windows, the last bios update was Nov 30, 2015.

just tried 2x 4gb PC3-10600 1333mhz, still wont boot. will only booth with the 2gb supplied with, looks like it will be sent back. wanted 8gb working minimum

Ram for your laptop should be 1.35.what voltage did you buy?

not sure, heres a photo

By my searching that ram is 1.5volts
I ,THINK ITshould be 1.35volts
But I could be wrong.best get a second opinion

Does it work with only one of the sticks in, and have you tried both slots with the "working" 2Gb stick? Looking likely it's the laptop itself, rather than the RAM, can't see this many sticks being at fault :(

Edit: unless, as people have said the RAM voltage is wrong, that's another possible option.

According to the crucial site (assuming I have the right one, Dual Core 8540p) then you need DDR3L (1.35v), shows 1600mhz (if it only supported 1333 it would likely slow down but still work)

this is the RAM that works

That stick is 1.5v 1333mhz, CL9, try and get something matching, but in a larger capacity, sorry but ive not read the whole thread. but in a larger capacity.

EDIT: The samsung stick you posted a picture of earlier is 1600mhz, CL11 1.5v, im actually surprised it doesnt work to be honest, it should just down clock itself to 1333mhz if thats the max speed the laptop supports
