Problem using 2nd screen

Got my PC working, it was fine using one screen via DVI, moved it back to it's normal residence and plugged in the 2nd screen via HDMI as well. When it boots I get the 'swirling', 'Windows 7' and then a black screen with a working cursor.

If I boot with just the DVI connected it works. If I then plug in the 2nd screen the icons on the desktop vanish.

If I boot with just the HDMI screen I get the 'da dum da DA' and the screen doesn't get a signal - the power light remains orange. However the sound suggests the PC has booted to the point where I'd select which user to log in as.

I've downloaded & installed the latest driver.

This is a Gigabyte F2A88XM-D3H mobo and an A10 APU.

Hardware fault? Driver fault?

I'm so frustrated, I need it as I have work to do that needs the big screens.

Problem solved and it was so, so silly. I had been trying to see if the Dell would work via the DisplayPort, and HDMI cable and an HDMI->DP adapter and it was set to DP rather than autoselected. All is well now!
