Howzit guys

I'm trying to install Window XP on to a machine, however, when I insert the boot cd it boots fine, and while it is in setup mode i keep getting different read/write errors. When I do get further into the setup stage, I format the drive, then while its copying files across, I still get errros, random. But the most comon one being @error copying apci.sys@ or somthing like that.

Now I have tried a brand new xp cd, I've tried a new cd drive, a new hard drive and new ide cables even tried new ram. Only thing I havn't tried is the board...could it be faulty?

Maybe I should try reset the cmos?

Any help guyas?

check the ram (try highering the memory latency settings + doing memtests)

if you're overclocking, lower the overclock
 
I tried another RAM stick, I couldn't find a jumperr to reset the Cmos, so I took the battery out. And put it back it. Still giving me random read errors, its now showing me:

"Setup can not copy the file: srgb.icm"

Could the motherboard be faulty?
It's not overclocked. Completely stock machine, old P4.
 
No luck guys..another error. Again random. Going to try another CD now..

If this doesn't work then what?
 
No, new cd is worse, doesn't even get into setup. Just says "i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. The error code is: ?"

So, I have no idea where to go from here. The CD works, as I used it last night to install Xp Pro nto my machine at home. Worked perfect. So I don't understand this..? :(
 
sounds like dodgy media / drive / ide cable, possibly hard drive..

do you have a spare hd you can test on?

Yes, I have tried the following, new: Cd Drive, Window XP Cd, IDE cables, Hard Drives. New ram as well.
The only thing I haven't tried is a new board...:(
 
unlikely candidate, but have you checked the temperatures?

try another psu before motherboard? (just incase)
 
well, if the CD works on another computer, then replacing the board may solve it (if you've replaced everything else on the board, then the good error-tracker inside of us tells us that the problem lays with the only part that hasn't been changed - the Board.

Actually, Bledd that's one thing I haven't tried, the PSU. Will give that a go, otherwise I am going to have to tell the lady who owns it it's the mainboard. :(
 
No go. Put a new PSU and checked temps. They are at 30C, still same fault. Says to me now, "Setup cannot copy Cards.dll" :confused:
