Problem with an ATI Radeon X1950 Pro

For some reason my X1950 Pro keeps locking up when I play Half Life 2 Episodes 1 and 2. After a few seconds GPU recover kicks in and everything seems fine for a bit and then it locks up again. I can play Half Life 2 itself with all settings on max fine so I though it might be something to do with the HDR effects in Ep 1 + 2, but it locks up with those disabled and I can play Lost Coast with no problems. I've also used ATI Tools to increase the fan speed but that doesn't make any difference.

If it was crashing playing HL2 as well I would assume its a borked card but it will quite happily play that all day and its not temperature related as it has locked up at under 70C. Everything is running on the latest drivers and nothing is overclocked. Anyone any thoughts or should I be thinking of a new card?

My full specs are:
Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R motherboard
HIS ATI Radeon X1950 Pro
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
2GB 800MHz DDR2 RAM
250GB Seagate Barracuda
Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 PSU
Windows XP SP2

I think i'm having the same problem with you, but mine happens when i play like css, tf2 and most Source engine games ( i know hl2 is on the source engine ). so i could use some help aswell, but i was leaning more towards my psu making the problem.

:S

i belive this is a driver issue i also have an x1950pro and have had it since launch along with everythng else in my pc soo at least a year.

i have noticed big problems with source games casueing vpu recovery more and more frequently this has happend the more i have updated my drivers. with the lates 8.4 being the worse drivers by far and also causing graphical errors in games. a friends of mine had exactly same the probe he ended up switching back to 7.9 and his vpu recoverys stopped. im about to switch back to 8.2 to see how they were i had some vpu recoverys with them before but a lot less and no graphical errors at all unlike now, they only started with 8.4.s

I also get the problem when I play Crysis. If it's possibly driver related then I'll look around for older drivers and try with them.

nope i dont think espeically as the newer ones dont work properly with 1950s.

the 8.4;s also caue graphical errors in Fear combat on my machine and track nations.

I've got the same card. I was having some problems with it recently, found out it was due to overheating, because the sound card was too close. That sorted it and I havent had any other problems, but then I havent updated the drivers since the 8.1.

I've installed the 7.9 drivers and its quite happily run HL2 Ep 2 for an hour and a half at maximum settings :D I'll try Crysis tomorrow but I assume it should run fine now as well.

Thanks for the help :D

think there was a hotfix out for crysis, not sure if it was with 7.9 or 8.1 but might be worth a check.
