Hi,

My friend build a new computer recently with all new parts. At the weekend he was playing a game when it blue screened. He restarted the CMOS and the temps were reading 104 idle with an i7 and h100i when he was overclocked to 4.5 and maxed 85 under load. He tried the stock cooler and got 90+. He had no idea what is causing this. Does anyone have any idea ?

Thanks

Worded that wrong. He was at stock clock and at 1.1v when it read 104. I meant he was overclocked to 4.5ghz before it happened.

He has now reseated the h100i with new thermal compound. Slightly lower but still 45 idle at 1.1v where as it was about 30 before

somethings up with the h100 if temps were 104c

stock cooler shouldn't be used if overclocked 4.5ghz for example,at stock clocks with stock cooler you should be ok temp wise

Is there anything that indicate it isn't ? Except high temps ?. We thought that until we notice the stock cooler was still reading high temps.

what cpu voltages are you using for 4.5ghz? I mean cpu voltage at load in cpu-z

ahh ok ^^^
what cpu 3770k?

try a longer cmos clear, leave out the motherboard battery for 30 minutes

then put back in and load optimized defaults in the bios and re enter your oc settings

then see what temps are like

you might need to reflash the same bios aswell as the bios's on gigabyte z77 tend to stick for some reason as in not saving the settings

oh and you can try running the pc with the h100 on its side just to try and dislodge any trapped air bubbles, they are a sealed unit but still contain a small air pocket

Is it possible that the processor is getting more voltage than it says ?

yes due to vdroop, but what you see in cpu-z at load should be right

if you do all the above what I said then you can start from scratch and rule out a bios or corrupt cmos issue

Why has this been moved to the overclocking and cooling section ? It may not be to do with cooling and it's nothing to do with overclocking ? That's why I posted it in general.
