Need some advice.

I have a problem with my automatic gearbox, so I made a post on the Volvo forums and was recommended a fix. This was to have ATF flushed/changed. So I rang my local Volvo dealer and explained I would like an ATF flush/change, they got back to me and said it would be a drain/change, so I accepted.

The work was completed on Wednesday, but the problem still persists. So I went back to the guys on the Volvo forums and explained what I had done, how much it cost etc. They have advised me that the dealer will have only drained some oil and refilled, going by the amount of oil I was charged for.

I'm not best pleased, so I've rang the dealer and I'm waiting for a call back. The outcome I would like is to have them do the job properly, and pay the difference. I have a feeling I don't stand a chance.

I don't see what you'll achieve. The dealer said 'drain and change' and you agreed to that, they did not say they would flush it for you, in fact, you asked for that and they said they don't do it.

As always start with polite but firm. See if they can be persuaded first. Don't start by shouting or screaming or threatening to get their manager or Volvo UK involved.

The user isn't complaining that they didn't flush it - he is saying that based on his research they haven't charged him for enough oil to refill the box so they haven't done it right? Or is there something that I have missed?

Correct osc89er. A full change requires approx 12 litres, I was charged for about 5-6 litres. I didn't ask them to drain a bit and top up.

Ok, assuming osc89er is more on the mark...how much did they charge for and how much does the transmition take?

EDIT: Beat me. :p

Well in that case, find out what they have done, by speaking to them. They may have some silly low priced oil, so you may have got a change at a low price.

depending on what the problem is, a gearbox drain and change can take a few times before enough of the rubbish is out and new oil in to make a differance, mine took three drains and fills to get it to work properly again.
box takes 6 litres, but only 3 can be drained, due to the torque converter holding three, so 9 liters were needed for the three changes at 10£ ish a liter it aint cheap to do even when you do it yourself but to get a garage to do it would be a major service money.

bullit

Spoke to Volvo, they confirmed that the amount used is correct for a change. I think the system needs flushing, but Volvo can't do that, and I've already forked out a fair amount already.

I may have to learn how to do it myself.

They did what you asked them to do.. If you'd gone in and said "I want x problem fixed" it's a different story to going in and saying "I want x done" in the hope that it fixes x problem.

I don't know what is causing the problem but I've read on a number of other forums about auto boxes (especially but not exclusively to high milers) and its not always a good idea to completely flush an auto box and put fresh in.

If its got a problem, those dirty bits may well be keeping it going. You take it to the dealer with a problem, they flush and put in new fluid and the box lets go, you'll blame the dealer.

They won't flush it. So I can either do it myself (somehow), or ask them to diagnose the problem which cost £57, and then then pay whatever else on top it is to correct it.

i did a fluid change on my autobox, was a pretty easy job even for a numbnuts like me.

Dropped the pan, put the intake pipe into one bottle of fluid (used watercooling pipe) then the output into an empty bottle.

Remember starting the engine and flicking it through the box, once the other bottle had clean fluid coming through just turned it off re fitted sump and then filled up as per spec.

Was about 2 years ago so probably missed out some steps, but garages wanted over 200quid to do it and it wasn't a bad job, and my box only took standard ATF so it was hardly expensive. (getting a filter was the biggest bitch as Volvo said it didn't have one, turning up there with the old one changed there minds!)
