Problem with Displayport to dvi running 3 displays

Hello,

I am trying to connect a 3rd monitor to my HD 5830 via displayport to DVI. The other 2 monitors are connected straight into DVI and HDMI ports. I went out today and bought a Sandberg displayport to DVI converter but i get nothing from that port, even when i try connecting just the monitor and nothing else via the displayport i still get nothing. Could it be the port on the gfx card is biffed or perhaps even the converter or could it just be some driver issues or a setting that i need to check . I'm using windows 7 ultimate.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Connecting three monitors you'll need an active DisplayPort to DVI adapter.

If it's a full size DisplayPort then one of these: HIS Active DisplayPort to Single Link-DVI Eyefinity Adapter

If what you've bought was just a few pounds then it's unlikely to be active.

In theory the adapter you have might work with just a single monitor but there's no way of knowing if it's the adapter or the card that's the problem unless you try a different adapter or are able to connect a monitor directly to the DisplayPort on the graphics card.

This is the adapter i bought LINK REMOVED It doesn't specify weather its active or not. I have tried running it through the adapter with just one monitor and still no luck. just blank screen. It seems a bit silly to me for manufacturers to even release a inactive type of adapter, what purpose does it serve?

At that price it's very unlikely it's an active adapter.

If it doesn't say it's active then it almost certainly isn't.

I have ordered an active dislayport to dvi.

So now i have a usless inactive displayport to dvi with a little question ...What the hell is this thing even for if it doesn't work? Its like i bought a nice little wire converter to look at. I suppose i could pin it on the wall and dangle some tinsel from it.

Can someone explain to me what use an inactive displayport to dvi converter is used for?

it's a passive adapter.

Works with some some cards in some applications. Not really sure how to explain.

The active adapter has a chip inside or w/e that converts the signal.

If say you had only 1 dvi/1 hdmi/1 dp connectors on your card, then the passive one would be fine to connect your second dvi monitor.

Yes thats what i have. HD 5830 with 1 dvi, 1 hdmi and 1 DP slots. my 1st monitor is DVI to my 21" AOC the 2nd is HDMI to 32" samsung tv, I have another 19" flatscreen i wanted to add via the Displayport with the passive connector but it doesn't work ..Even trying just the displayport on its own connected to any of the monitors still does not even work. I have orderd an active displat connector hopefully it will arrive today and this will work.

Its possible my gpu wont work at all with passive connectors. I guess i will find out soon.

Curious. It ought to work fine on its own. Whats the dp adapter and are you using an adapter ontop of the passive dp one?
