I have a solution, if you like. I could take my 2500k out and come to you, that way you can upload the lastest bios.

That is really kind of you, but I think that would surely be too much hassle. I think I am going to have to buy a £26 celeron processor and update and use a spare lol!

If you do go for the cheap LGA1155 CPU, I would strongly recommend you go for the G530 over the G440. As the G530 is a 2.4GHz dual core, while the G440 is only a 1.6GHz single core - and you only save £4 going for the G440. This means that the G530 would be a much more powerful backup CPU and will command a higher price if you resell it.

That is good news, though big respect to Idleman - it was a very generous offer of your time and expertise

With your friend's i3 - just make sure it is a 2000 series, not 500 series i3 or swearing may ensue.
