Hi I don't usually visit here but I have a weird problem that I can't get rid off.

My headphones have been playing sound like there set to 5.1 or 7.1 but they are set to Stereo in everything I can find for example when listening to music I can hardly hear the singing but can hear all the background noise above it and when playing games. A racing game I can hear cars behind me and to the side like there my own but I can't hear mine at all its like its away in the distance and in games where people are talking I have to turn to the side so that I can hear them correctly while if looking at them straight its like hearing them from the side. :p

My headphones are Turtle Beaches X11s.

Are they on there way out(practically are as I don't want to use them) or is it some problem I can solve easily if so any suggestions on what to do.

I need to use them at night so I don't wake people up but I have started using my monitor speakers during the day for recording my youtube videos.

I'm unfamiliar with how the X11's work, are they just a plain stereo headset, or do they have some kind of 5.1 sound processing? Looking on Turtle Beach's site, they look like stereo, as they don't seem to use the Xbox's digital optical connection, which would be required for 5.1 sound.

If they are plain stereo, you must be using some sound card with virtual surround sound, Xonar or X-Fi maybe?

Ok, so you are using them with onboard audio? I'm pretty sure the board you have has no virtual surround sound for headphones. Usually it's the UD5 and UD7 boards that get the virtual surround sound features. Without any kind of virtual surround sound processing, you should just be getting plain stereo. Have you tried connecting them to an MP3 player or something, see if they work as expected?

I tried them on my laptop and it was just the same.

Yes on board sound.

It would seem they must have developed a fault then. :( Can't see any other explanation why they would sound like that, with different sources.

Yeah I need a headset and about £40 tops cheaper the better but I still want good quality I also want the cups to go over my ears.

TBH, I don't think I can recommend anything better than what you already have. I'm not a fan of headsets, the problem with them IMO, is that the cheaper ones are just rubbish. Whether it be SQ wise, or build wise. To get anything worth having, you have to pay a lot. Good headphones can be bought for less than £40, yet most headsets under £40, aren't that good at all. If you don't fancy another pair of X11's, then maybe someone else can recommend something that in their opinion, is decent enough.
