I recently replaced some budget 3GB DDR3 ram with Corsair 6Gb 1600Mhz ram

however using Cpu z it doesnt look like its running at the right speeds can anyone help me brings things up to speed.

heres a print screen of the memory sections on cpu z my mobo is a Gigabyte X58 DS4 with a i7 920 C0 stock speed installed.

I believe the Front Side Bus on your system runs at 133MHz stock. From your pic a FSB:DRAM ratio of 2:8 we get 133*4=532 which is pretty close to your 539. Your base clock is probably running at 135MHz as motherboard makers often seem to bump them up a bit. Mine runs at 200.9MHz for example.

There are two things you can do here.

1) Overclock :D increasing your FSB to 200MHz will lead to the ram running at 800MHz; the max speed it has been rated at. You'll also get a 4GHz processor thrown in for free! Of course your mileage may vary and your components may not make that speed.

2) Increase the FSB:DRAM ratio. The exact settings to change are motherboard dependent but increasing this to 2:12 (if that is a valid divisor) in the BIOS will lead to the RAM running 800MHz. You may need to set the memory timings manually. You'll also need to up the RAM voltage from 1.5V to 1.65V.

So i increase the fsb to 200Mhz and my memory should run at the right speed and my processor speed increases ?

i plan to overclock but thought it involved a lot more than just the fsb

It does. You're not going to get 4GHz without tweaking some voltages. Don't go straight to 200 in one go or you may break something.

If you do decide to go the overclocking route you'll need to do some research then take small steps increasing speeds to find the limits of your hardware.

I've been running AMD PCs for years so I don't know much about overclocking Intels. There are probably some guides in the Overclocking & Cooling forum. A quick google for "i7 920 overclocking guide" brought up Core i7 Overclocking Guide For Beginners. May be useful :)

For changing memory timings I found this thread which has pics of all the bios screens for your motherboard.

The "system memory multiplier" and "DRAM Timing Selectable" look like the relevant options. Here the 1066 would be the same as 533 reported in CPUZ. With Double Data Rate (DDR) memory data is sent twice per clock cycle so some software lists it as double the underlying frequency presumably because higher numbers always sound better..

Anyway, I don't know quite how they'll work so you'll have to look at the available settings to find what works. You may find there is a "1600" option and selecting that will automatically pick the correct timings and voltage.

Actually you may need to enable the "Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)" setting as your CPUZ pic shows the 1600 SPD setting listed as "XMP".

Finally got round to turning on the extreme memory profile and now have htis for the settings:

i assume Nb frequency is the northbridge ? all the timings seem to of jumped up inc the Dram frequency so i think i have what i want however would running the Nb at a higher frequency than normal cause any possible damage ?
