Problem with mums IE

Hi everyone,

My mum was having some trouble with her browser, and recruited me to have a look at it. Basically when she goes on google the google image doesn't appear, and when trying to access a google based site, nothing loads, just a white screen. Also on facebook, when she attempts to go on the website, the blue bar at the top of the screen with 'home' etc loads, but the rest of the page it just plain white.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what the issue is or how to approach fixing it, so I'm hoping that's where you lot come in :D. A couple of extra things to note, the web works perfectly well on google chrome which she also has installed but doesn't like, so it's not a browser wide problem on her laptop, and she likes/is used to IE, and doesn't really want to change browser, so that would be a last resort.

Thanks in advance for the help everyone :D

Thanks for the quick response, just nipped to have a go, but unfortunately, it didn't work. I've just discovered youtube (owned by google...coincidence? :p) isn't working either, it lets you click a video, but when it comes time to actually load the video it's just a black rectangle and never plays. Most of the video thumbnails aren't there either in the recommended videos.

Pretty strange

Have you run a virus and adaware check?

Yeah done that. She's usually pretty careful with that sort of stuff but I did run her antivirus and anti-spy/mal/everything else-ware that she has on the PC. Nothing doing :(.

Does youtube still use flash? Or is it HTML5 now? If it's flash could it be a flash problem?

Sorry guys, had to pop out for a while.

I tried to uninstall flash and reinstall. The uninstall seemed to go fine, however the website won't pop up the download for me to reinstall it. I'm not really fully versed on the ins and outs of web pages and how they work, but according to the adobe website, the reason that would happen is that java script is turned off, which after checking it isn't.

I then went into chrome to try to download it, but when I download it, the thing won't pop up to install when double clicking. EDIT: In fact, I've redownloaded it, and moved it from the downloads to the desktop. When I double click it, the icon disappears from the desktop/folder, but nothing happens .

She does have a bunch of (frankly useless) toolbars installed, but none of them are currently active.

I would prefer to just install firefox because that's what I use, or just get her to use the chrome which is working fine. But she likes and is used to IE, so as I said, it would be a last resort really I'm afraid.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far though, much appreciated :D

Have you tried the IE without add-ons option yet?

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

That way you can see if it's one of the toolbar's affecting it.
