My brothers Rover 400 won't start without push starting it.
The battery has been replaced, no difference.

There's a 'click' noise coming from the engine when turning the key.

He said he thinks it's the immobiliser as it's no longer making the beeping noise it used to when unlocking the car? I've never heard the noise he's on about so I'm not convinced that's the problem but is it possible to start the car when push starting it without disabling the immobiliser?

It starts fine when push starting it.

Any ideas?

thanks

Join Rovertech.net mate. Least then you will get people that know what they're talking about, instead of keyboard mechanics.

Plenty of peeps who know what there talking about here pal, out of interest, how do they type then if there not "keyboard mechanics" ?

If it starts with a push, it will not be the immobiliser, its the starter motor. ;)

Sounds like the starter solinoid is sticking/defective, or the wire to it could be loose. Should be relatively easy to check if you know your way round an engine.

Happened in my escort, deffinitley the starter motor, as i had the same "click".

Sometimes it worked if i rocked the car back and fourth in gear.

You can test if it's the starter for certain by getting someone to hold the key in the start position and then tap the starter casing with the wooden end of a hammer handle (or something similar). :)

What a plank, just cause people bad mouth rovers don't mean they arn't good with cars, perhaps cause they know what they are talking about is the reason they didn't buy a rover...........

The use of "keyboard mechanics" in this instance was to cover the band of people here that suddenly become experts when behind a keyboard.
The type of person that criticises peoples cars without actually having been anywhere near one.
If its not you, then you have no need to take offence..............

Found out it is definitely the starter motor.

Anyone know how much a new one would cost? (just the part)
and how long it might take to fit?

I can't see it being too difficult to replace?
It's only a 1.4 and there's loads of space in the engine bay

Brand new you're probably looking at around £150. You could always source one from a scrappy though :)
I would think you could get one for around £80 - £100, could be wrong though. £150 sounds a bit high to me (not being funny or anything, it's just I work in the motor trade :) ) Should be able to fit it in about an hour or so.

Sorry yeah, I meant to say at the most. £100 is probably more likely.

As I said, he's probably better off getting one from a scrappy for next to nothing :)
