I have a 500 GB external drive and whenever I try to copy a file from it to my local disc C the drive turns itself off and windows says it doesn't recognize the drive because if malfunctioned.
Any ideas what's wrong?

could be a dodgy power connector in the drive, or bad usb cable

plug it in internally to test the drive, then try another usb cable, if that doesn't work, buy an icybox for it.

My external hard drive has developed this problem too. When you plug it in it says its not recognized and its malfunctioned. However, if I power it off and on again it works fine, but this has to be done every time I reboot!

I've searched all over and cannot find a solution.:(

That didn't make a difference m8.
I need a sata 3.5" icybox have oc's got it?
cheers

what didn't make a difference?

if it doesn't work when plugged in internally (ie, directly in your pc, without the casing) then the drive's knackered

the quality of some external drives (like lacie and akasa) are shocking

Oh I don't know if I can actually install the drive in the base unit because I have a really old e-machines pc.
What I done was just unplug the drive from an extension usb cabe directly into my USB PCI card.
I think the drive is ok because I can still access my files it's just when I try to burn something onto a DVD disc or copy a file to my internal hard drive it buggers up.

I attached the USB cable to a usb 1.0 port on the motherboard and the drive is stable now.
I think the problem lies with the USB PCI card. Ever since I installed the PCI card my pc always freezes at the windows xp startup at the blue bar and I need to turn the pc off and back on again before it actually starts up. The only problem is reduced speeds :(
