Hi chaps,

So I've been to the optician today and had new glasses fitted and made up. On wearing them for a few hours I've noticed that they've cut one of the lenses incorrectly and so it's not sitting in the frame correctly. Think an oval shape wedged into a circle hole, it's snug but there are gaps on the edges.

I'm planning on seeing the optician tomorrow and explain the situation but I know it won't be easy. With custom items replacements are not easy to obtain as it leaves them out of pocket. Any thoughts on the consumer front? If I don't have any luck with the optician what are my options? Would a credit card charge-back apply?

Just go and ask them, I'm pretty sure there are some cost effective ways they can solve your issue without having to re-cut a lens.

No I'm pretty sure they would just do it for you since they done it wrong and its not your fault that theyre not cut properly. Just go and ask and I am sure they would be glad to help you get them replaced.

I had this exact same problem about a month ago. The opticians were doing a BOGOF offer on glasses. They cut the lenses the same for both even though the frames were different so noticed this when I got home. I also noticed that there was a small scratch on one of the frames.

Took them back the next day and even though they said 'No, no, this isn't true, but as you are dissatisfied, we'll re-cut the lenses. We'll also give you new frames' and they did just that :-) can't complain!

Do you mind if I ask what optician, and whereabouts they are based...depending on the answers I might be able to tell you whether you can just walk in without a problem or not

It's an independent store in Berkshire. I won't say more that at the moment so I don't besmirch their name if they are happy to rectify the issue. Didn't get a chance to go in today, will have to leave it 'till my contact lens check-up next weekend. Will update then!

Cheers folks.

Ahh ok, had it have been the company I work for I could have been able to give more advice. All I can tell you, is that every tale I have heard with this exact scenario, all opticians havebeen more than happy to rectify the problem without any hassle or grief. I would imagine this is even more so the case with an independant, as their one to one service is what seperates them from the big guns.

When you take into account the actual price of lenses bought at cost price, it is must more cost effective for them to redo these lenses for you, than to have a full refund issued, which is more than entitled, and keep your custom.

Just go in and tell them your happy with all aspects of the service you were given, just not so with the lenses, and Im pretty sure theyll offer to replace it without you even asking for it to be done.

Cheers again guys, I'm paranoid because I had a very bad experience with a chain (D&A) a few years back. They screwed up my prescription by sending off for the wrong power lenses and then tried to suggest that the incorrect prescription was in fact the same as the correct prescription, even when the numbers weren't the same. It took the threat of trading standards and a lot of whining before I got my money back!
