Problem with Netgear RP614 Router

Hello all

When I am downloading files from anywhere, through my netgear rp614 router the speed seems limited and hardly ever gets to full speed (NTL 10Mb, so about 1.2mbps).
I tried unplugging my router and just using the NTL modem and I got 1.2mbps downloads.

I have set up port forwarding but that didn't help. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Im looking for a wired one as I can't afford to go wireless

Mine is a v1 with the latest firmware.

If I do decide on going wireless, do I need an access point because I don't have any wireless connections on my computer?
