Problem with OCZ StealthXStream 2 500W PSU

Hey, picked one of these up last week in the promo sale OcUK where having on them. I bought it to replace my current CoolerMaster 460W power supply, and so I could put that in the system I am building up for my gf.

Anyway, I've just taken the CoolerMaster PSU out and put the new OCZ one in and I've encountered a problem. It only appears to have one 4 pin CPU connecter? My motherboard has a 8 pin slot! I was positive it had the right connectors when I bought it as I had to check it had the correct GPU connector aswell!

I suppose what I'm asking is can you just use a single 4 pin CPU connector if your motherboard has 8 pins? If you can't I won't even be able to use it on the system I'm building up for my girlfriend, E2140/Foxconn mobo/X1900XT as that has an 8 pin slot also!

Also on the OcUK site the page says the PSU comes "+12V Rails: 2", which I thought was the CPU connectors?? It also says it comes with 6x peripheral and 4x Sata, when actually it seems to come with 4x peripheral and 3x sata?? I suppose I'm just abit miffed as to why the page appears to say something false!

strange that, my older OCZ GameXstream 600w that blew up today had a 4+4 pin CPU connector.

EDIT: just realized you got the 500w version, yeh you need to 600w version.
 
well a lot of ASUS motherboards, including one i received on the weekend for a build has a 8pin socket, but four of the connectors are blanked of with a little plastic plug for use with 4pin connectors, but just pull this out for a 8pin connector.

so i think using just four pins on another board cant hurt?

Edit: It says on this page "The 500W StealthXstream PSU, only has 1 4 pin connector not 2. If your motherboard has 8 pins for CPU power, you should use the 600W unit."

Of course, you can, if your mobo's power draw is no more than 500W. Mobos with (expected) power consumption >500W do have 8-pin power, <500W 4 -pin power slot.

That calculator gives me a recommended wattage of 642W! I'll have a look in the motherboard manual now...
 
On the Intel motherboards they recommended using the 8 pin for Extreme version of there cpu's.

4 pin should be fine.
 
Well considering I've been using a 460W PSU I can't imagine it to be that accurate? Maybe it is though? Don't have a clue!!
 
When you used the psu calculator did you put 4 CPUs in, as I have seen that done before.

Your system in your sig probably uses 230w full load and that is being generous.
 
Haha, yes I did!! It now says 339W which makes more sense!

Just had a look in the motherboard manual and I can't make much sense of it :(
 
It's definately fine to put a 4 pin connection in the correct half of the 8 pin socket and run it that way. The 8 pin should be considered optional. I've run boards myself lke that in the past. In fact, I've heard that it's better to do it that way than use a 4 to 8 pin converter.
 
Fair enough, thats what I wanted to hear. Main issue is that I don't want to fry anything!
