Problem with Phanteks TC14PE CPU cooler?

Hey guys, i finally builded my computer last night and i installed a phanteks cpu cooler with both fans however i noticed that only one of the fans is running. Both the cables of the fans are linked together by another cable(unifying link) that connects through the mobo's cpu cooler 3-pin interface. Initialy only the bottom fan was working but as soon as i swapped the fan connections on the unifying link only the middle fan was working. Is there a problem with the unifying cable or its just that the CPU is not producing enough heat to require both fans working?

Thanx for reading

I'd go for the splitter too as most fan headers should be able to cope with two standard fans. The Phanteks are only 0.15A so you will be able to run two or three quite safely, even when allowing for a higher startup current.

You've probably got a broken wire somewhere on that link, or a dodgy terminal or something like that.

You guys are right, one of the 3-way cable connection on the fan splitter is missing the yellow cable...no wonder its not working. Do you think OCuk is responsible for sending me a replace cable? Technically speaking the cable was faulty from the day i received the cooler...

One socket is defective.

Yellow cable is rpm sensor. Only one fan can supply RPM signal to motherboard;)

Not OCuk's fault, it's Phanteks' fault. I would contact Panteks support. My guess is they will send you out a new splitter.

And this thread just made me realise.... that I needlessly ordered a fan splitter for the third fan I ordered, as the phanteks obviously comes with one....

Ok thank you everyone for your help, i contacted Phantek's support and told them about the situation. I hope they dont take forever to respond to my email...

Reaper:
Cooler and 2x fans with one splitter. Will need another for 3rd fan. ;)

Was just playing around while online with my case & CPU fans all at max

Fans = 1300rpm
CPU = 33-31-36-31c
mobo = 28-27-39c
ambient = 22c

Very happy camper. :)

I'm wondering if this is a common issue, or perhaps a faulty batch, but I have exactly the same problem.

I'm running off a Sabertooth Z77. Y-Splitter connected to CPU header. When I discovered only 1 fan was spinning, I swapped the fans around - this time the the fan that didn't spin before spun fine this time and vice versa, so that confirmed the fans worked fine and that the problem was the cable itself.

My Phanteks (blue, if it matters) was purchased from a different online retailer who dispatched it yesterday, received today (just emphasising it's 'current' stock).

I must admit I was a bit unimpressed with how the condition it arrived - some of the fins were bent, and some of the 'nibs' on the fins were completely bend out of shape. Some of the blue paint had also come off on the side of some fins. At first I thought "this has already been used!!", but I think it's more that it's just bad quality control at Phanteks. Would explain the cable fault!

I think there might be some packaging issue lately. Phanteks sent me a cooler and the heatsink was bent :/.

Anyway, the free adapter being sent out is the PWM adapter, not the Y-splitter but it's still worth emailing them telling them of the issue. I'm sure they can help out. But a quick solution would be to just use two separate fan headers.

Such a shame if true... The Phanteks is one of the best air coolers out there, and it looks fantastic (if a little big...) so for it to be let down by them cutting corners in quality checks is a big let-down and very concerning. I hope they don't cut those same corners when it comes to the block or the heatpipes.

Ohh and the fans literally had small chunks taken out of them in areas - thankfully on the side that sits against the fins so I won't notice them, but that's not the point.

I would like my £60-70 hunk of metal to arrive perfect, otherwise i'll go elsewhere next time... Even if this cools my i5 better than the competition, I think next time i'll consider the competitors first.

If the y-splitter is all that's wrong then I don't think returning the product is the best way forward - it's inconvenient to the customer and will cost the retailer on two-way shipping. Either the manufacturer should send a free replacement cable, or the retailer should refund the cost of what it would cost to buy an alternative y-splitter, imo - it just makes sense all round, surely?

Would have to remove cooler to access socket, but disconnected everything else from PWM splitter and tried. Only difference is splitter is powered direct from PSU instead of mobo.. which should make no difference. Might get access to another system to test it on this weekend.

Request another from Phanteks but hasn't arrived yet. Will keep you posted.

I should add there that it will unlikely make any difference if you do connect direct anyway, especially as you've proved that the PWM signal is coming through with your TY-140s. It must be a fault with the PWM adapter circuit. Unless the circuit is that sensitive that it can't tolerate the voltage drop across an extra 2 terminals and a few inches or wire.

I agree. PWM signal is strong enough to run 7 different PWM fans through splitter with all the extra wire and terminals. It should be more then strong enough only signaling one Phanteks PWM adapter even with extra terminals and wire.

Meant to come back but I emailed Phanteks about this and the faulty cable. They apolgised for the issue and have started investigation into my claim that things may be slipping past quality control checks. They have sent out a replacement cable as well as some of their 140mm fans - makes up for my botched unit and very impressed with their response to the situation.

Glad to hear you got good service from them. I've been waiting 2 weeks Monday with no news for PWM adapter. :(

Plan to followup on Monday.
