My wife's just come home and complained that the car was "spluttering" and she struggled to get to 40mph. I went out and listened to the car and to me it either sounds like the exhaust is blowing or it's misfiring.

Any ideas what it's likely to be?

Vacuum pipe

Don't drive the car if one of your coils has gone. Unburnt fuel will enter the cat and damage it! :(

This! and if the coils dont help, check the electrical wiring loom, in clio's it moves and rubs the wiring raw exposing the wires to water and each other! and it tends to bring the symptoms you've mentioned

Jesus, can that thing even pull its own weight along the road? The older 1.6 was gutless enough, but a 1.4?

Replaced the 4 coils today, the last one looked burnt out and covered in soot. Didin't have any plugs to hand so will get some and replace those.

Running well again though.

LOL, doesn't bother me too much as the wife uses it for taking kids to school and I use a 306 XSi for getting to/from work :D

Know what you mean though, had it hooked up to the skin on a bowl of custard and it kept stalling as I pulled away ;)

Funny thing is, when we got it 3 years ago, I went for the 1.4 because I thought it would be cheaper to run for fuel and road tax. Only to find out the road tax is the same as my 2.0 '98 306 XSi
