So my raptor x 150 GB died, the one with the see through case

contacted western digtal for rma about 3 weeks ago and went for their advance rma, where they ship the product first then you ship yours, but if you dont your credit card gets charged

anyway just been told im getting the new 300gb velociraptor - amazing you would think normally, except i have a hot swap enclosure, which means i have no use for this drive as it wont work in it, i use the hot swap to switch hard drives between xp and vista

example

5 bay hot swap

bay 1 = vista ( dead raptor x 150gb)

bay 2 = xp (raptor 74 gb)

bay 3 = music (500gb WD)

bay 4 = movies (500gb WD)

bay 5 = important stuff (backup drive seagate 160 GB 7200.10)

now i could sell the new drive - with the current economic climate and credit crunch i would be selling it for much less than its worth then having to pay full whack for a new drive

could phone western digital and ask for the drive which will work in a hot swap?

my case can only take 3 drives without the hotswap so getting rid of it is not possible neither is running the veloci seperately

what would you guys do?

Why will it not work?

There are different models with and without the heat sink, so as long as you get the one with the heat sink it should be physically compatible?

Have you checked exactly what model you are getting?

There are three different models, a 2.5" without the heatsink and two different versions with a heatsink, one which fits a standard backplane and one which doesn't.

yes i checked the model and googled it - i then looked at the reviews which had pictures of the backplate to show the difference between this backplate and a normal one

it wont work because all the connectors are in a different place so it wont fit, bit like trying to plug a 3 socket plug into a socket made for 2 plugs

the sata port as well as both power modules need to be in the same location as they usually are for my hot swap enclosure to work

The newer Velociraptors now have the S-ATA and the Power connectors in the standard place. As far as i am aware they are the only ones that are now available. They will fit all hotswap and raid enclosures... :) If it doesnt i would call/email them to ask them to change for the WD1500HLFS model. As far as i am aware they never made the 150gb ones in the older style...
