hi,

got a problem whereby my line speed has droppped from 1.9 to 1.2mb.

nothing has changed and i've tried different routers and filters without success.

if i plug into an extension up stairs or the master socket itself i get 1.2mb but if i plug into the test socket i get the original 1.9mb.

i know it sound like a daft question but do i simply need to replace the master socket to get the speed back ?

reason i ask is i'm not sure what differences there are between the test and master socket.

cheers.......

The difference between the socket on the front of the master socket and the test socket is the faceplate. Is the extension wired into the faceplate?

Not sure if all Master Sockets are like the BT one that I have. But basically the fascia that you see is actually connected to the test socket, you take that front fascia off and the main wire is connected to test socket. The front fascia also has the split filter for the telephone line so if yours is like this, may suggest some issue in the master socket?

thats what i figured but not sure whats likely to be in the master socket unless its just wiring from the plug that slots into the test socket and the plug i connect the phone onto

sry if i sound a bit noobish, but i dont think so, as the faceplate only has 2 wires going into it.

The faceplate shouldn't have any wires going into it if there aren't any extensions wired to it.

ok, so if i've got it right the faceplates 2 wires are the extension ?

if thats the case how come the master socket and the extension have the same issues ?

You obviously have poor internal wiring. The best solution is a filtered master socket faceplate
run a cable direct to your router.
That still leaves poor internal wiring

Because they're wired together?

so do you reckon the long wiring for extension and short wiring for master socket to the test socket are both u/s ?

ordered a new faceplate hopefully sort part the problem out, then just need to re wire the extension.

right new master socket (separate socket for adsl and phone) is in place, but i know have no internet available on the upstairs extension, phone itself works fine.

cabled up points 2 & 5 to the master socket for the extension.

ran an extended ethernet cable from master socket to upstairs and it works fine.

tested extended ethernet cable with current filter into the test socket and that works.

ran a loose run of cat5 upstairs (to rule out old cabling going u/s at the same time as the new socket was installed) and still no internet signal.

checked the wiring into the back of the master socket and extension and both seem secure.

so i've come to the conclusion that either

1)i've been unlucky and got a dodgy loop of cat5 cable (which i dont think is likley)

or

2) the upstairs extension has gone u/s

anything else anyone can think of ?

cheers.........

Check all of your connections individually meticulously and plurally - it aint rocket science!

it is too me :(

have checked/double checked and triple checked the wires, they SEEM fine and slotted in ok without any movement, just wanted to confirm i'd not missed anything else.

looks like the back of the new master socket is duff.

borrowed an extension socket off a m8, ran a foot length off cat5 from the back of the master socket to the new extension socket and no joy.

ended up having to go back to the original sockets and stripping off the plastic covering off the cat5 to get a signal.

used the tool i got the same time as the cat5, wire is in solid and not loose but it just wont let a signal through unless i strip the plastic off :(.

You need a good insertion tool - a Krone type IDC punch-down tool - NOT those plastic pushdown rubbish They are cheap enoug if you google around
