Problem with the New Build

Have a problem with the new i3 2100 set up - just bought all the parts from OCUK last week and I assembled it my self (not my first time). This set up is for a friend of mine and after some usage he is saying its getting an error.
First when he was watching cricket on an ICC streaming site, and again when browsing an online cloths shop, both times PC has just froze with lines on the monitor.
When I first installed all the components and os I tried running 3Dmark 06, just for a laugh to see how i3 2100 hd2000 graphics will cope but I can remember now having the same issue. PC just froze with multiple rows of coloured lines scrambled all over the monitor.

Any Ideas?

Connected to an old dell VGA monitor and a PS/2 keyboard with a usb wireless mouse. Running Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit with SP1

Similar setup, been driving me nuts all week, nice to know someone else has the same problem with i3-2100 :). RMA'd original ASUS H67 mobo and replaced with an Intel and still have problem. Can reproduce the fault at will, if I go into Media Center and watch TV or play an old recording from a different PC it takes 10-20 secs for the display to freeze in vertical columns of coloured lines about 1 inch wide, sound also distorts. Hard reset is only cure. Nothing in logs as far as I can see apart from unscheduled shutdown. Latest drivers from Intel and memory checks OK.
This has never occured outside Media Centre....so far. Maybe something to do with hardware video acceleration of HD or SD?
Fault does not occur playing same file in VLC.
Have ordered new memory (different manufacturer) and HD5450 card to help diagnose where the problem is, arrives Monday.

Whats a "web note"?

I'm an Ex-IBM hardware engineer, I fear this maybe a problem in the silicon, this whole platform seems rushed to market!
 
I am revealed to find out I am not the only one! I know that doesn't sound right but hey it feels good to not be alone in this case!
There is one thing which I would like to try out and see next time I visit him, I noticed that base clock is a little bit over clocked with P8H67-M Pro mobo. Can you check this in your bios and see if its the same. I think if I can remember correctly it was 103 not 100 as it should be.
Have not ordered any thing else yet, as my friend says he didn't get the error after that. Do you get the error when running 3Dmark2006?

Have an Intel DH67BL mobo, not overclocked in any way, however I did raise the voltages slighly on the RAm and Graphics with no effect. I have tried 3DMARK03 and it passes that OK, will try 06 when I have finished reverting to/rebuilding my old PC , that was for sale on eBay.....!
I need some stability here while Intel/MS sort this problem out, I'm not expecting a quick fix if its the driver and an even longer wait if its silicon. Sandy Bridge PC will be set up as test PC, so if theres anything you want testing fire away, I'm retired so have the time.
 
I would like to check what iGPU frequency the i3 is running at and the bclk(base clock) of the mobo please.
Also the I would like to confirm what the mem speed its running at as well, H67 chipsets cant seems to run memory higher than 1333MHz.

iGPU is running at whatever is default for DH67BL board, the performance tuning page in the bios is confusing to say the least but I have not changed or tweaked performance. Not sure I know what you mean by mobo base clock, memory is running at 1333MHz.
Its taken me an hour to get the system up and running properly on a different display (Samsung Full HD via HDMI), the bios on this board seems incapable of interrogating the display to get the right resolution so it would not boot to desktop. Had to go into safe mode and delete the driver and files and then reinstall the driver when windows came back up on the standard VGA driver:mad:. The graphics and bios for this board/CPU really are a bag of worms, feel I'm debugging it for Intel:(!
Anyway...fault is still there and very solid when trying to view an mpeg2 video or HD video in media center. The fault does not occur in VLC. Past experience tells me that the media center coders are way behind the rest of windows (remember the BBC HD and ITV HD issues) so suspect that this is a dual core, integrated grahics with hyperthreading issue in WMC. I turned off hyperthreading and the fault still occured.
I have an HD5450 and different memory coming tomorrow, I will try these to see if I can get a fully functioning setup, I have confidence the HD5450 will cure my ills! At that point I will revert back to the Sandy Bridge PC and wait for Intel/Microsoft to cure the problems.

You never did tell me what a web note is!!

Is there a way of getting Intel involved without calling their 0870 number (a particular bug bear of mine!).

PS...did you really have to beat us by 10 wickets yesterday!

Sorry for late reply, my PC is stripped down for cleaning and doing some mods. Still running with both side panels open and all the cables hanging out. (and I was doing some experiments with a slipstreamed windows 7 SP1 installation)

Couldn't find a number for intel only addresses in uk.

Please let me know if any thing changes with GPU and/or memory.
I have a spare HD4850, I might have to "lend" it to my friend if this issue resolves with a dedicated gpu.

To be honest I was bit bored with regard to the cricket match, it was.....uneventful.
 
Just a quick note to say that the HD5450 cured my problem. Havn't fully tested yet but appears to have fixed the Media Centre playback and TV problem. Where this gets us I don't know, is it a driver issue or an WMC problem with the i3-2100 platform.
I will report again after fully testing, it needs to work on two cloned full HD creens but I can't test that until I revert to the Sandy Bridge PC as my main PC.
Surely someone else has come accross this and informed Intel or MS. Or are we really at the cutting edge:D.
 
OK, everything now works as intended, quite well in fact running media centre in two full HD screens. Everything happens virtually instantaneously, thumbs up to the HD5450 and the CPU side of the i3-2100 at least. Having had about 10 days of frustration trying to get a working system I'm gonna leave it be for a while and look out for bios and graphics driver updates for the DH67BL mobo and software fixes for Windows 7 MC. As VLC worked perfectly I don't see this as an i3-2100 hardware issue....thankfully.

If anybodies interested I'm running 32bit with 2GB (1333MHz) memory and a 521MB HD5450 (XFX) to a Benq screen over DVI and a Samsung TV over HDMI (both full HD), Media Centre is about as responsive as it can be, everything else absolutely flies along. The PC hardware setup less software comes in at less than £300, bit of a bargain:D:D:D.
