problem with xfx 5870 xxx ?

For what reason are you using the hotfix out of these?

· Performance drop is observed with a supported ATI CrossFireX™ configuration when using the thermal scope while playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare

· Performance drop during the opening cinematic of Resident Evil 5

· Wheelman freezes while loading the game menu and can't play further

· The desktop mouse cursor becomes enlarged at random while using Windows 7

· Flashing in various OpenGL titles – City of Heroes, Enemy Territories: Quake Wars, Riddick

· Heaven benchmark (DirectX 9 mode) – Grass flickers and white boarders observed around the edges

· DTS-HD and Dolby True-HD not working properly with certain receivers while using HDMI connection on ATI Radeon™ HD 5000 Series

. Support for the OpenCL™ GPU component of the ATI Stream SDK v2.0

. Support for ATI CrossFireX™ on Eyefinity configurations

. Support for DisplayPort audio

If you do not encounter these problems, use this software or use the features then the hotfix is not required and may just cause problems so it would be best just sticking to the monthly official releases of the drivers

oops ;)
didnt have that much money!

5870 it is.

and just tried the hotfix to see if any different.

hah ;)

First things first, it would be helpful to list the games, they might be known suspects also have you tried the games with no overclock on your CPU, again you have said the CPU benches fine with an overclock but some games can be fussy so you need to troubleshoot everything

The XFX XXX also has an overlock itself, might be a small chance its a bad card and it's struggling to keep the clocks at the default voltage and in turn it's artifacting, you coudl try reduce the clocks to default so 850mhz core

DCS black shark
Iracing
Dirt 2

after reading a post about the Intel Matrix Controller - I uninstalled that..... booted back up - ran DCS black shark as before and has been running ok since....

(even in the background while typing this.....)

weird.

if it happens again Ill try and underclock the card.

underclocked to 850.... ran mecha demo.... runs to end starts again...

put back to stock / overclock 875 - rand demo.... runs to the end !

aaaaarrrggghhhhhh!
hate these random crashes.

memory on the card ?
heat ?

I had the same thing overclocking 5870 to 900MHz on stock voltage, try setting your card to 850MHz on the core and see if it fixes it.

EDIT: okay you have done, I think it's most probable that XFX are shipping untested cards.

Could be a mobo problem, as theres absolutely loads of people getting these white (and other coloured) etc... screens with the 5 series cards, and the Asus boards are more common for it.

You could try disabling the ATi High Definition Audio Device in the Device Manager (under the Sound, Video Game Controllers), as thats fixed it for a few people.

just trying at stock speeds..... I guess if everything works ok .... RMA card time as it wont run at the XXX speeds ?

ok just ran the ladybug demo (at stock 850 1200)

and for the first time ever its ran (thats with CPU at stock or 4ghz)

so seems like these XXX cards may not be just that ?

Hmmm that's lame :( but at least it's a solvable problem

Make sure you test thouroughly with both standard 850 1200 and XFX XXX clocks 875 1300, if then you're 100% sure its the overclock, then I'd RMA, you didn't pay the extra to run at normal clocks, so yeah! Just tell them you get artifacts with some software and they should take it back, if it's from Overclockers UK, then you can return it straight to them

GL

If you bought it less than 7 working days ago just tell them that it crashes and you want to return it via distance selling act.

Might be best to stick to the reference cards I don't think partners even test the overclocked cards they probably just ship em out hoping for the best... although saying that reference cards have been hit and miss as well.
