hi all,
my old laptop has given up the ghost, it has some things on the hard drive i need.
i put the drive in to anothe old laptop but it says, no op sys found.
is it dead? or can i connnect it with a cable, of some kind, to a newer laptop so i can read it and put the data on a flash?

thanks guys

What is the type/model number of the drive have you taken out that you are trying to recover from?

Did you take the normal disc out of the old laptop or was it put in as well as an existing & working disc in the laptop?

Are you saying you tried to boot it?

Don't you just want to connect it and access it like a regular storage device?

If you don't have a laptop or PC that can fit a second drive then the easiest solution is likely to be a drive caddy that connects via USB. I assume you were not using bitlocker?

If you were using bitlocker, then good luck

You can always try using a Linux device and plugging it in on a HDD caddy, might work, perhaps

haha, no bit coin, just pictures of the kids, grand children and me dogs.
i just took one drive out and put the other in, it didnt boot in the other laptop
if i use a hd caddy and try it on my newer laptop do you think that will work?
i think the old drive may be win xp??? all windows are propper copys.
if the caddy will work can some one please post a link.

thanks guys

Ah, I see where the problem might be, it could be that the newer laptop doesn't work with xp if it's even remotely new.

A caddy would be your best bet and just Google HDD caddy, you'll find many results, but I can't link some here due to forum rules

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £26.89 (includes delivery: £3.99)

The cable solution is on pre-order but you can pick these up for ~ £5 elswhere. (check USB connector on your laptop)

Think the proper caddie would be best though. If the HDD is still ok, use it as external storage and the caddie will protect it from dust/knocks better.

Yep, as others have said - the old drive is probably fine, and if it was running Win XP (or even Windows 7) you're highly unlikely to be using any form of encrpytion on it - so any old USB caddy will probably do the job!

Word of caution around the Akasa adapter: check you have a USB3 connector or you will need an adapter that can draw power from a second port and that's not always possible with laptops (no adjacent usb ports was a real pain on my laptop).

On being able to read the new HDD from XP, it should be able to read NTFS I think but will not work if the newer drive is encrypted with bitlocker.

the os on my newer laptop is the lateste windows.
if i get a cassy, will i be able to read the older files on the old drive os?
Yeah, should be no problem there
But the most important thing should be that this is a lesson learnt - always back up your important files either to another HDD or a cloud service

thanks guys, will get a caddy and have a go.

cheers

Data wise it would be OK assuming , but if its a hdd rather than a SSD it may not provide sufficient current over USB2 (some SSDs can be fussy too).

Assuming the disk is a normal SATA drive anyway...

Have seen external DVD drives with dual USB, but have never seen a external HDD needing them. (slim drives)
