So I got this card off the bay, I've had such a headache with this thing.
Basically it wont run 3D, it will try and fail horribly, then attempt to VPU recover which never works resulting in me needing to reboot the PC.

Its a Powercolor 1950pro 256MB, I'm using 8.2's atm and temp checking via ati-tool, its 30ish idle, 42max underload, it usually dies before getting this hot though!

I'm just going crazy because I've only just had my P5K die now this is all I need

Oh also it has an Accelero fitted, not really sure what its stock fan looks like but in all this I'm locking the Accelero to 100% fan speed.

To me its showing signs of Overclocking abuse.

Any suggestions?

If it was me and my system had been fine upto now, i would ask a friend to try the card in the their PC and see what happens. It could be something as simple as a driver problem, but I would try that first.

id go along with that. if it falters in a 2nd pc id think its the card.
also check to see if the coolers attatched properly, though it seems to be cooling ok.

the guy selling may have been getting rid of a dud card also - something to think about.

Return it to person you bought it from?

Great helpful reply, congrats on the +1 post count.

Tried a clean install of windows?

Yep I have, pretty annoying though, CCC is such a load of **** imo, and Ati-Tool doesnt actually support the 1950Pro.

I have two rigs here and it doesn't want to play in either, but I'm slightly concerned that the 8.2 Cats could be the problem. But then again, 3D apps actually appear to run "fine" for a short space of time, then the failing of VPU recovery starts.

As its a 3rd party cooler it may be worth reseating it to make sure its on properly :)

Tried this and yet no joy. :(

I have contacted the seller voicing my concern, I think im going to push for a refund and just buy myself an 8600GT, I'm fed up of trying to grab second hand bargains, it just never mixes with computer hardware :(

Also another point I didn't make, while idle in Windows the display seems ever so slightly fuzzy, its hard to explain but its really annoying because you notice it while concentrating, its along straight lines and around the edges of stuff, but its really small... but then in the same system using my 1900XT its perfectly fine, really odd

Any helpful input appreciated! thanks to most of the above posters. :D

Hi mate,

I have exactly the same proble with the same card... It seems to work ok in 2D mode, be soon as you show it anything 3D the screen fills with artifacts and crashes the PC..

I've tried windows re-install and reseating the HSF, but to no avail :-(

I folded constantly on this card for over 6 months 24/7 and would suspect that's what killed it. It wasn't a heat issue and the temps never got out of hand.

I've even tried re-flashing the bios (forcing the utility to update when it detects and identical bios on the card) but this still won't fix it.

I know this don't help you fix your card, but will help you avoid the hours of messing i had to do!

I'd say defo push for a refund as it must have been faulty when he sold it to ya

Hope ya get it sorted mate,

Regards,

Rich.

Ah nice one buddy, curious though, what drivers are you using? have you recently upgraded and come into problems or something?

Just been looking at the "OcUk 8600GT" looks a steal to me, reading the reviews say it handles CSS etc easily, which is enough for me!
