Problems 7600GT AGP - HELP

Hi Peeps,

I purchased a 7600GT end of last week from OCUK.

Having big problems playing 3D games - after 20-30 seconds, my system reboots. I have tried 3-4 different drivers (new ones and the ones supplied by Leadtek) but no change.

In 2d my system is fine - video playback & general apps.

I changed my CPU fan last night, but no change - do you think it could be a PSU problem - the 12v rail is 16-20?

I've done everything - I've cleaned my old ATI drivers off with drive cleaner (pro) and messed about with the 4 in 1 drivers but still the same.

I think the only thing left to do now is reformat - after that....could it be a duff card - it looks as if other people are having issues as well.

Thanks in advance,

BBJ

Welcome to the forums. :)

If you can id try and test it in another machine as well, but theres a few Leadtek AGP 7600 GT's that are faulty, i think this could be about the 3rd-4th one now thats popped up. :(

I got one of these exactly the same time as you. Cleaned out my old ati drivers and used the latest drivers from nvidia 91.47 i think..
I havn't had a problem. Games all work and i am extremely happy with the performance gain from a 9800 pro...

My psu is 420 w and on 12v provides 22amps. Like loadsamoney advises, try it in a mates pc preferably one with a more efficient psu. What is your psu anyway?

Cheers for your replys - what a helpfull lot you are :)

I don't think I'll get to ID it in my m8s system (I asked this afternoon - I was told that dodgy cards not coming anywhere near his!!)

My PSU is a Q-TEC 550W.

My mobo is an ASUS A7V8X-X been a really good board (so far) - I'm running 1 GB ram with an XP3000.

So - what next? Have I run out of s/w driver options or is it time for the big F :(

Cheers,

BBJ

BTW - I must admit the last time I formated my system was about 18 months ago - I know - I'm crap!!

The Q-Tec PSU has me a bit scared to be honest! ;)

A lot of GPU problems can be put down to PSU problems, and I'd be amazed if that particular model was making anywhere near its advertised power/amperage.

There is quite a bit of hysteria on here regarding a lot of things, but the one involving Q-Tec PSUs seems to be justified!

Do you have another PSU you could borrow to try out, preferably not a Q-Tec?

My Dads PC is running a 7600 GT AGP with a 500W Q-Tec with no problems so I don't think it's your PSU, unless the PSU is years old since they do wear out over time. Rest of his system specs - P4 2.4 (@ 2.8) / 478 board / 1.5 GB ddr333 (@ 193 ) / 1xHDD 1xOptical etc.

Btw did you connect power up to the card? The AGP one has a power input unlike the PCI-E one.

Check the temps under load. Reboot after 20 mins sounds like either power (despite what I said above) or heat.

VIA

I had one of them qtec psu fail on me. Turned out quite a lot of them were not up to scratch. Not saying they were all bad, just reports of them not living up to their claimed power ratings and the 12v rail not being to stable. Mine went on me with a 9800 pro...

I would bin it and try another cos your problem sounds power related. update your chipset drivers an all. reformat as your last shot... I didn't have to reformat mine been 2 years since. 3.0ghz pent 4 northwood 1gb geil golden dragon memory 7600gt all stock 3dmark05 5770 and 06 2889. You should get around these figures when your sorted....

Ok - so PSU then - that's what I'll try next - I've had the Q-Tec one for about 3-4 years (on many hours d/l, playing games etc) - it could be on it's way out....

So what do you chaps suggest - I don't want anything fancy as I will be upgrading nxt year....

My Debit card awaits...

Thanks again,

BBJ

get something cheapo like a hiper psu. they have many good units in their range. go for a 425w or 525w model. can be had for around the 40 quid mark.

Your going to a lot of trouble to validate an issue with this card that may not be your responsibility.. call supplier and ask advice. you as the customer should expect quality service and quality product, supplier is required to supply quality, tested goods, or at least provide returns process for those goods that are not up to standard, and a system that help you debug fault.

in an ideal world, but i'm sure OCuK are a credible and quality supplier of components that they will help you out

I'd ask your mate again, it's very unlikely IMO that your card is going to damage his system even if it's faulty. It might give you an answer without you potentially wasting £50 on a PSU.

I'm not saying it isn't your PSU at fault, but if there's some way of finding out without spending money, I'd always go that way first.

Remember to check card temps and that you connected power to it.
