Problems After CMOS Battery Change

Hi,

I thought it was a simple job to change the CMOS battery as my clock was losing about five minutes a day, but now that I have changed it I have a load of problems as follows.

When I boot up I now get an ASUS screen then taken to a message stating "CHIP FAN FAIL or speed too low". I took the opportunity to hoover out the inside of the case with a plastic hose as I do every few months without any problems as I am very careful not to disturb anything except remove the dust. I think this message has something to do with my CMOS or BIOS or whatever settings and need to press F1 to continue or DEL to enter setup. After pressing F1 I am taken to another screen which states "Press F4 to enter RAID Utility. This one times out after a short time and goes on to start Windows.

My clock was reset to 31 December 2004 causing certificate error messages but that seems to be fixed now that I have reset the clock in Windows.

I have also lost my sound.

In Device Manager I have two exclamation marks for unknown devices. ACPI\PNPB006 and ACPI\PNPB0ZF are the details listed in properties.

System Info

ASUS-SLI DELUXE ACPI BIOS REVISION 1015, 21/10/2005
Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 - 64bit
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 4400+
Memory 3GB

Any help would be appreciated in getting things back to normal.

Hi, power down> turn PSU off> unplug your 24pin connector> clear cmos again > psu on go into Bios them install LOAD OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS > F1O save and exit.

Then after that you'll have to reconfigure your Bios again Raid, etc.

31 December 2004 causing certificate error messages > reset time and date again.

Hi,

Many thanks for your quick response. I do require some clarification on your instructions.

"power down> turn PSU off". I take it this just means shut down Windows and pull the mains supply plug out?

"unplug your 24pin connector". Not sure where this is?

"clear cmos again ". Sorry don't know what this means?

"psu on go into Bios them install LOAD OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS > F1O save and exit". I take it this mean plug back in and boot up the computer, but how do you "go into BIOS?"

"after that you'll have to reconfigure your Bios again Raid, etc." Sorry totally lost now.

Sorry for being thick, but can you possibly give me a step by step please?

Hi,

I have worked out how to clear the CMOS from the ASUS website and have been doing so by powering down removing the power cable and changing the jumper for ten seconds then putting it back.

I do not seem to be loading the BIOS settings. There is no option for LOAD OPTIMISED SETTINGS and the nearest I can find is LOAD DEFAULT SETTINGS. After selecting, confirming and then pressing F10 confirming "save these configuration settings and exit" I am taken back to the original screen with the error message, F1 to continue etc and nothing has changed still no sound, unknown devices etc.

I have tried this three or four time with the same result. The only thing that changes is that the clock always reverts back about eight years even although I have reset it so I must be suceeding in clearing the CMOS each time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi again, get the motherbroad manual or download it > Your motherbroad manual will help you to learn > How To Clear The CMOS > Load Optimized Defaults > Press F10 to save and exit > Set Time and date. I would have a read up on how to do this before you start.

Its not hard to do just take your time.

1- Shut down windows > at the rear of the case where the kettle lead plugs in there will be a small switch turn off or switch it off at the mains. If you can get into the inside of your case with out unplugging it do so.

2- Clear The CMOS,

3-Then when you turn on your PC, when you get the Logo Screen press the Delete key to enter the Bios Set Up and Load Optimized Defaults.

4-Press F10 to save and exit.

when you get back into windows set your time and date.

Then after that you'll have to reconfigure your Bios again Raid, etc, see manual.

Sorry about first post, l hope these instructions are a lot easier to follow.;)

When you hoover your case, you manually hold any fan blades near the mouth of the hoover right?

I only ask because if you suck a fan in there with your hoover it can make them spin MUCH faster than they are designed for & can break because of this.

The hoover and "CHIP FAN FAIL or speed too low" is what makes me want to ask.

Hi,

Thanks again for you support. I had already downloaded the manual from the ASUS site which was how I learned to clear the cmos. The only option on the Exit menu is Load Setup Default. After confirming you can either F10 or select Exit and Save Changes. Both do the same thing and bring up another confirmation box. The loop then starts again and you are taken back to the first screen and enter setup etc.

I must be clearing the cmos as the date always reverts to 2005 if I do not reset it in the BIOS. If I do reset it to the correct date in the BIOS it is correct when I get to Windows so I must also be saving the changes, although nothing else has changed.

This is really cracking me up now!

The unknown devices will be coming from something you have switched off/on in the BIOS after clearing it. One of them will be your sound.

The moment they are set to how they were, your OS will be able to recognise them. I don't know what they are but searching your error codes suggests disabling MIDI and GAME port in BIOS (look inside the Onboard Device Configuration in the BIOS).

The midi part would make sense to me with your sound.

Hi,

Thanks for your input however I did not touch anything in the BIOS other than ajusting the time clock and "Load Setup Default" and Save Changes.

Also your suggestion does not explain why I am going round in a loop every time I boot up.

Hi,

Is it possible that with my many attempts to resolve this issue that I could have overwritten the default or optimum settings and when I now select "Load Setup Default" I am simply loading rubbish?

Axel (tearing hair out)

Okay.

When you took your battery out, your BIOS = wiped.

All all previous settings in your BIOS = gone.

Now they have been wiped, you need to change certain things in the BIOS back to how they were.

Your system will have been relying on certain BIOS settings in order for some things to work. ie sound, one of the settings will decide which hardware to use for sound.

Another thing might be telling your BIOS which device to boot from, this might be the source of your boot looping.

You will not have wiped your default or optimum settings, your computer simply will not have been running EITHER set.

1st thing is 1st, getting her to boot without the loop.

Go into the BIOS > load DEFAULT values > make sure your hard drive is FIRST in line in the booting order, F10 save and exit.

Now the comp restarts and what happens?

If you get the same boot loop now go back into BIOS and start trying with different SATA modes, try ACHI F10 save restart, if that dont work try RAID (unless you deffo only have one hard drive.)

While there do as suggested and disable MIDI and GAME too.

Edit: And are you still getting the fan slow warning?

Hi,

Thanks lot, I think I am "almost" back to normal.

After removing the case again and powering up to check all the fans were running I discovered that I do not have a chip fan on the MB, I have a heatsink, so I have disabled the chip fan warning.

A few other changes to the BIOS as follows.

Disabled on board sound (AC97 or something) as I have sound card and my sound is now working.

Made the hard drive first boot and disabled full screen logo, which has cured the loop.

Disabled game port and Midi port which has removed the errors from device Manager.

Selected "Yes" for operating system to configure Plug and Play devices not required for boot. Not sure at this stage what this has done, but it sounded like the correct option. Is this OK?

I enabled AMD Cool and Quiet Technology. Is this OK

The only annoying thing that I am aware of now is that during boot up it hangs for about ten seconds on a black screen with the option to press Ctrl+S or F4 to enter the Raid configuration. I only have one hard disk and cannot see how to get rid of this screen. All of the NVRAID options are set to disabled in the BIOS.

Hey Axel.

Sounds like you are into with the swing of things, genuinely well done!

The hang is more noticable with the booting logo screen to distract your eyes.

What is your SATA set to? If that is set to raid it will have a look for raid. Choose IDE or ACHI (just test both).

Sounds like you are on the home strech tho' dude :D
