Problems after fresh install

Built my friend a pc recently, sold him my case/hard drive/graphics card and dvd re-writer.

I installed everything fine, pc booted first time but wouldn't load into windows. I assumed it was because of driver conflicts with the new hardware and didnt expect it to work. As such we went about re-installing windows.

However the only windows cd he had was a master copy that doesnt require you to use a Cd-key etc and installed Windows xp professional. It was basically a cracked copy.

When windows finished installing we booted in, didn't install anything else motherboard wise etc and attempted to connect to the internet to download drivers etc. Didn't work.

Went into usual network settings and fiddled around etc - main error when trying to setup a connection was network hardware was not detected and told us to go about installing network cards/modems etc. In device manager no modem is showing. In the control panel options no modem is showing.

I thought it was a bit strange so went about trying the Motherboard driver CD - still no luck.

Is this a case of tell my mate to use a proper windows copy or something silly i've missed during the build? My friend has another old pc running the same copy of windows and it works fine..

Also if i were to bring round my official copy of Windows 7 to try, would it cause any conflicts on my current pc at home if it worked and connected to the internet?

Thanks for any advice.

Piracy is frowned on by this forum, so asking for help with something you just admitted was a cracked copy is not exactly the way to go.

My only advice is get a proper copy of Windows.

I'm going to suggest he does get an official copy of windows obviously as its a brand new pc build.

However, for the purposes of testing the hardware all works correctly we used a master copy of windows - im only assuming its a cracked copy as it didnt ask for a cd key. Regardless, its not my pc i just built it and used what i was told to use and the only thing available at the time. As i said we HAD a genuine windows already on the hard drive, it just didnt work due to driver conflicts as i expected, but i was instructed to try anyway as he didnt purchase him own windows at the time of ordering. So its not exactly pirating is it?.....i've got the CD key, i've purchased windows i just didnt have the original cd.

I'm asking if someone can provide a bit of helpful advice, i.e like i asked if i put my official windows 7 on his pc whether it would cause conflicts on my pc at home......

And whether someone has come accross this issue before etc?

Whether im missing a driver somewhere, in the device manager there are several showing as not installed correctly, but where do we get the drivers if they're not on motherboard cd and dont install with windows.

Any actual help is appreciated.

You can install your copy of Windows 7 on his computer - just don't enter your Product Key [leave it blank]. Your friend will only be able to use it for 30 days, however.

You can get drivers for the motherboard from the manufacturer's website.

Thanks for the help both of you.

I went back round last night to finish the job and took my Windows 7 round. Installed the 30 day trial and all worked straight away with no issues.

Turns out the problem was not the dodgy (?) XP, which i am just assuming was dodgy btw, but was actually the new hardware on XP in general. Would have been ok if i could get on the internet to download the latest drivers but with no internet that proved to be difficult!

So hope this also helps anyone else with same problems
